Plateau State Governor Caleb Mutfwang has reiterated his strong support for the establishment of state police as a vital measure to combat insecurity in Plateau State and across Nigeria. This statement came during a meeting with the Nigerian Guild of Editors (NGE) at the Rayfield Government House in Jos. The governor emphasized the urgent need for legislative action to facilitate the creation of state police, aligning his views with those of President Bola Tinubu.

Mutfwang urged the National Assembly to persist in their efforts to advance this initiative. He stated, “When we do have state police, I am sure we will be able to respond better and address many situations faster.” His call for local law enforcement comes as the region grapples with persistent security challenges.

In a proactive measure to bolster local security, the governor announced plans to recruit an additional 1,450 personnel into the state’s security outfit, known as Operation Rainbow. He expressed confidence in the state’s ability to enhance safety, stating, “We are not shy of our responsibility to provide security for our citizens. We have not shirked this duty and we will not.”

Commitment to Peace and Security Initiatives

Mutfwang highlighted his administration’s commitment to peace and prosperity as foundational pillars of governance. He cited the swift convening of the State Security Council and the establishment of a modern Security and Information Centre as significant steps towards improving safety in the state.

A fact-finding committee on insecurity has already submitted its report, which Mutfwang plans to present to the president and relevant security agencies. He assured the public that the findings would not be ignored, stating, “The government will take action based on its findings.”

The governor also addressed public perceptions regarding his political affiliations. Despite rumors of a potential defection from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), he reaffirmed his loyalty to the party, asserting, “The worst fears people had about the PDP is gone.” He expressed optimism about the party’s future, noting that the political landscape in Plateau State continues to evolve.

Mutfwang reflected on the recent local government elections, describing them as the most peaceful in the history of the region. He attributed this success to efforts in fostering dialogue and understanding among various communities.

Support for Peace Initiatives

During the meeting, NGE President Eze Anaba commended Mutfwang for his bold peace initiatives and the revival of local media, particularly The Standard newspapers. Anaba emphasized the importance of sharing Plateau’s story from the perspective of its residents and praised the state’s progress amid significant challenges.

Anaba remarked, “We commend Your Excellency for the peace initiative you’ve taken and you are still making to ensure that peace comes and the bloodshed stops in the state.” He expressed gratitude for the governor’s hospitality and extended an invitation for him to participate in an upcoming national conference in Abuja.

With ongoing security challenges, Mutfwang’s advocacy for state police and commitment to enhancing local safety continue to resonate with residents, as they seek lasting solutions to restore peace in the region.
