Kenya Mourns Opposition Leader Raila Odinga, Dies at 80

Former Kenyan Prime Minister Raila Odinga, a prominent figure in the nation’s political landscape, has died at the age of 80. His family confirmed that he passed away on March 6, 2024, while receiving medical treatment at a hospital in India. Odinga’s health had been a topic of concern in recent weeks, although family members and close associates consistently downplayed speculation regarding his critical condition.

Odinga, affectionately known as “Baba” (Father) and “Agwambo” (Act of God), was a central figure in Kenyan politics for decades. As a master political mobiliser, he became a household name, running for the presidency five times without securing victory. Throughout his career, he frequently alleged electoral fraud and advocated for electoral reforms. His most notable achievement came in 2017 when the Supreme Court of Kenya annulled the re-election of then-President Uhuru Kenyatta, a landmark ruling that Odinga celebrated as a victory for democracy.

Despite his fierce political battles, Odinga had a reputation for reconciliation. After his defeat in the 2022 elections, he entered into a partnership with current President William Ruto, forming a “broad-based government” that included several of his allies in influential positions. This agreement was seen as a step towards national unity following protests that escalated into violence, including the storming of parliament.

Earlier this year, Odinga sought to become the chairperson of the African Union Commission, with backing from the Ruto administration. Despite strong regional support, he lost to Mahmoud Ali Youssouf of Djibouti.

Odinga’s legacy is marked by resilience and dedication to the pro-democracy movement. He endured two periods of detention under the authoritarian regime of Daniel arap Moi, spending a total of almost a decade as Kenya’s longest-serving political prisoner. His imprisonment, which began in 1982 due to an alleged coup attempt, propelled him to national prominence and solidified his status as a champion of democratic ideals.
