Flags as Symbols of Unity: A Call for National Solidarity

The recent discussion surrounding the display of national flags in the UK has intensified, with significant implications for social cohesion. The debate has been particularly contentious following actions by left-leaning councils, including those in Birmingham, which have removed the Union Flag and St George’s Cross from public spaces. Critics argue that these moves set a negative precedent, suggesting a rejection of British symbolism that does not extend to other flags that continue to fly unchallenged.

In a noteworthy development, even Downing Street felt compelled to publicly affirm the Prime Minister’s patriotism amid this growing controversy. The Union Flag and the St George’s Cross are more than just national symbols; they represent the history of Britain and honour those who fought to protect its values. These flags embody the contributions of individuals from diverse backgrounds, all of whom have played a role in shaping modern Britain, which prides itself on democracy, liberty, and the rule of law.

VE Day and VJ Day recently marked their 80th anniversaries, and these events serve as a reminder of the unity that prevailed during the Second World War. The end of the conflict saw Britain and its allies come together to defeat fascism. As a British Muslim MP, I took great pride in leading a parliamentary debate commemorating these pivotal moments in history. The sacrifices made by individuals from the Commonwealth, including my wife’s grandfather, Lance Corporal Samundar Khan, highlight the diverse fabric of those who served under the British flag.

More than 10 percent of British armed forces personnel come from minority backgrounds, including the renowned Gurkha regiment of Nepal. These servicemen and women exemplify bravery and dedication, serving under a banner that signifies democracy, courage, diversity, and tolerance. The Union Flag and St George’s Cross do not belong to any political party, religion, or ethnicity; they are symbols of unity that belong to all citizens.

As a British Muslim of Pakistani heritage, I feel immense pride when I see our flags flying over schools, hospitals, and the Parliament. My heritage is integral to my identity, just as my nationality is. Embracing pride in Britain does not diminish my cultural background, nor does pride in my heritage negate my British identity. It is essential to view these aspects of our identity as complementary rather than divisive.

Modern Britain should celebrate both our heritage and our national identity without forcing individuals to choose one over the other. Political populism often seeks to create an “us vs them” narrative, particularly targeting British Muslims. To my fellow British Muslims, I urge you: do not allow hate to compel you to hide your identity. You are essential to the fabric of society, contributing significantly in fields such as healthcare, politics, and education. Your achievements deserve recognition, and pride in our flag can signify a celebration of our shared contributions.

The journey of our predecessors, who arrived in Britain with dreams and determination, has shaped the nation we know today. They did so under the same Union Flag and St George’s Cross that continue to fly. Unfortunately, these flags have sometimes been co-opted by extremists on the far right, attempting to reinterpret them as symbols of exclusion rather than inclusivity.

It is vital for the Union Flag and St George’s Cross to remain symbols of unity, representing the equality and freedom that define this country. Whether at sporting events, military parades, or civic celebrations, these flags should evoke pride and togetherness, not division. We are proud to be British, proud to be English, and proud to stand as one nation.
