Milorad Popović, a prominent Montenegrin writer, has expressed deep concerns regarding the current political climate in Montenegro, calling attention to the troubling rise of nationalism and the influence of far-right elements in the government. In a recent interview with “Slobodna Bosna,” Popović lamented the presence of what he termed “chauvinists and nobodies” in power, reflecting on the country’s painful past during the conflicts of the 1990s.

The interview follows a controversial incident involving the mayor of Pljevlja, who made derogatory remarks about citizens of Bosniak nationality. Popović characterized this behavior as indicative of a larger problem within the political landscape of Montenegro, stating that only those unfamiliar with the historical context of Montenegrin-Serbian relations would be surprised by such developments.

Historical Context of Nationalism

Popović traced the roots of contemporary tensions back to the early 20th century, specifically referencing the 1907 assassination attempt on King Nikola of Montenegro. He described a long-standing conflict between advocates for a “Greater Serbia” and the Montenegrin people, who have fought for their survival throughout history. According to him, Serbian nationalism, akin to Russian nationalism, possesses a messianic and imperialistic quality, believing in the right to dominate other nations.

He pointed out that, despite being defeated in four wars, Serbia continues to pursue its imperialistic ambitions, resulting in significant human suffering during the breakup of Yugoslavia, which left hundreds of thousands dead and displaced. Popović noted that this ongoing ideology remains resilient, fueled by a sense of divine mission among its proponents.

The Current Political Landscape

Reflecting on the current situation, Popović underscored the plight of Bosniaks and Albanians, whom he believes are among the most endangered communities in Montenegro. He criticized local political parties, suggesting they have compromised their integrity by aligning with “clerofascists” and deniers of Montenegrin identity.

He expressed concern over how the regime, led by Andrija Mandić, uses minorities, including Albanians and Bosniaks, to project an image of democracy and European values while simultaneously perpetuating discrimination against Montenegrins. The collaboration of various political factions with the ruling party, he argues, undermines the fight for basic rights and freedoms.

Popović’s remarks also touched on the opposition’s failure to effectively challenge the status quo, as many members are focused on securing their own political status rather than addressing the broader issues facing the nation. He emphasized the need for a unified front to protect Montenegrin sovereignty and democratic values.

The writer’s criticism extended to the cultural sector, which he claims has capitulated to the pressures of the current regime. He highlighted a lack of critical thought and analysis within Montenegrin society, where intellectuals and cultural associations have failed to stand against the rising tide of nationalism and oppression.

In closing, Popović called for the establishment of a unifying national organization to consolidate efforts among pro-Western elements both domestically and abroad. He stated that without clear differentiation between democratic and nationalist parties, the risk of manipulation and further erosion of Montenegrin identity remains high.

As Montenegro navigates these turbulent political waters, Popović’s analysis serves as a reminder of the historical patterns that continue to shape the region and the urgent need for resistance against divisive ideologies.
