Reflecting on 1965: A Year of Change in Hull, Beverley, and Hedon
The year 1965 marked significant events both globally and locally, particularly in Hull, Beverley, and Hedon. Historical milestones unfolded as the world witnessed the rise of cultural icons, the end of capital punishment in the UK, and notable incidents that shaped public consciousness.
In the realm of music, The Beatles received their MBE honours and released iconic albums such as Help! and Rubber Soul. Meanwhile, the political landscape changed with the abolition of the death penalty, a pivotal moment in British history. Closer to home, Hull experienced a turbulent period for workers, highlighted by a demonstration at the University of Hull on October 12, 1965, where students rallied for better pay. Earlier in the year, employees from East Yorkshire Motor Services (EYMS) also went on strike, reflecting the growing discontent among workers.
The year was also marked by tragedy with the passing of Sir Winston Churchill at the age of 90. A photograph from the archives captures a scene at Richard Dunston’s Hessle shipyard in November 1965, where workers aimed to right the schooner named in his honour. Unfortunately, disaster struck when the vessel toppled onto her starboard side while being fitted out, resulting in the breaking of three masts just one week before its scheduled launch by Princess Alexandra.
As we delve into the past, nostalgic photographs from this era reveal much about the local community. The images depict scenes from Hedon and Beverley, showcasing men often dressed in suits, which at the time symbolized aspiration and professional ambition. Many may also recall their experiences in schools during the 1960s, featuring the distinctive hinged wooden desks that were a staple of that period.
These reflections on 1965 provide a glimpse into a time of change and challenge. The photographs serve as a window into the past, capturing not only the historical events but also the everyday lives of people in Hull, Beverley, and Hedon. As you explore the gallery of images, you may uncover familiar memories that highlight the character and resilience of the community during this notable year.
