A couple’s cross-cultural romance is under scrutiny as online critics label their relationship as opportunistic. Lyn, a 24-year-old from the Philippines, has faced accusations of being a “gold digger” after marrying Brett, a 25-year-old American engineer. Their love story began on a dating app in 2022, leading to a long-distance relationship that lasted two years before they met in person.

Despite the significant distance of over 8,000 miles, Lyn felt an immediate connection with Brett when he first reached out. Their relationship blossomed quickly, and after Lyn visited Brett in Massachusetts, he proposed. The couple’s decision to marry has drawn mixed reactions online, with many questioning the authenticity of their love.

Facing Criticism and Stereotypes

Lyn began sharing their journey on social media under the handle @lynnbrett, but the exposure has invited harsh judgments. Some comments have labeled her as an “AFAM victim,” a term used to suggest that Filipinas who marry Western men are merely seeking financial gain. Speaking on YouTube’s show “Love Don’t Judge,” Lyn stated, “Trolls say I married a fat American man for a visa.”

Brett has also felt the weight of these criticisms. He remarked, “Mostly we get a lot of judgment on TikTok that she’s with [me] for the green card.” He insists that if Lyn were truly after financial support, she would have chosen a wealthier partner. “If she was in it for the money, she would have gone after someone a lot richer,” he explained.

While Brett is currently the primary breadwinner, Lyn is actively seeking employment in the US. In the meantime, she has taken on household responsibilities and enjoys cooking traditional Filipino dishes for her husband. “I love cooking and I love baking,” she shared, emphasizing the couple’s commitment to building a life together.

Overcoming Negativity Together

The couple has also faced criticism regarding Brett’s appearance. Lyn has reported receiving negative comments suggesting her husband has a disability. Brett addressed these remarks, stating, “My only disability is worrying about comments like that.” Despite the negativity, they remain focused on their relationship and the joy it brings them.

“We’re in it for the long haul, sorry to break it to you,” Brett affirmed. Lyn echoed his sentiments, asserting, “He belongs to me and I am happy. This is not disgusting, this is love. We have a beautiful love story, we are different and unique.”

As they navigate challenges and societal judgments, Lyn and Brett remain resolute in their commitment to each other, aiming to showcase the beauty of their cross-cultural relationship. Their story serves as a reminder of the complexities of love across borders and the importance of understanding rather than judging.
