Major European Airports Experience Cyber Disruption, Flights Delayed
Major European airports, including Heathrow, Brussels, and Berlin, experienced significant disruption on March 2, 2024, due to a cyber-related incident affecting check-in and baggage drop systems. The incident prompted warnings of potential flight delays and cancellations as passengers faced extended waiting times.
According to airport service provider Collins Aerospace, the disruption stemmed from an issue with their MUSE software at select airports. The firm acknowledged that “We have become aware of a cyber-related disruption” and noted that the impact was primarily on electronic customer check-in and baggage drop operations. Fortunately, they indicated that the situation could be managed through manual check-in processes.
Brussels Airport reported that at least 10 flights were cancelled, while another 17 faced delays of over one hour as a result of the cyberattack, which occurred overnight on March 1. Passengers were advised to check with their airlines regarding flight status before arriving at the airport, as only manual check-in and boarding procedures were in effect.
At Heathrow Airport, the busiest airport in Europe, check-in and boarding systems also experienced issues due to the same technical fault linked to Collins Aerospace. The airport issued a statement indicating that these problems “may cause delays for departing passengers.”
Meanwhile, travelers at Berlin Airport encountered longer waiting times at check-in, as a banner on the airport’s website informed visitors of the technical difficulties affecting operations across Europe.
The situation underscores the vulnerability of key infrastructures such as air travel to cyber threats. As authorities work to resolve the issues, affected airports are urging passengers to remain informed and prepared for potential delays as operations gradually return to normal.
With the increasing prevalence of cyberattacks targeting critical services, the incident raises questions about the security measures in place to protect vital transportation systems. Further updates from Collins Aerospace and the affected airports are anticipated as the situation develops.
