Coinbase Targets $2 Billion BVNK Acquisition to Boost Payments
Coinbase is reportedly in advanced discussions to acquire London-based startup BVNK, specializing in stablecoin infrastructure, in a deal estimated at nearly $2 billion. If finalized, this acquisition is expected to close by early 2026 and represents a significant step for the cryptocurrency exchange as it seeks to diversify its business beyond trading fees and enhance its footprint in digital payments.
The potential agreement, which remains under negotiation, would mark one of Coinbase’s largest strategic moves since its public listing in 2021. Currently, Coinbase Ventures, the investment arm of Coinbase, is already among the investors backing BVNK, highlighting a pre-existing relationship that could facilitate a smoother integration.
Strengthening Digital Payment Infrastructure
Coinbase has been progressively developing a broader financial ecosystem, responding to fluctuating trading volumes resulting from market cycles. Stablecoins are becoming increasingly vital to its revenue model, accounting for nearly 20 percent of total revenue. In the third quarter of 2025, Coinbase generated approximately $246 million through partnerships with Circle, the issuer of the popular USDC token. The acquisition of BVNK would deepen this focus, enabling Coinbase to offer faster, more cost-effective fund transfers via blockchain networks.
BVNK, founded in 2021 by serial entrepreneur Jesse Hemson-Struthers, seasoned technologist Donald Jackson, and chartered financial analyst Chris Harmse, specializes in facilitating payments for institutions and fintechs using dollar-backed stablecoins. With a platform that merges blockchain efficiency with regulatory compliance, BVNK has gained the trust of investors such as Citi Ventures, Visa, and Haun Ventures—each supporting its vision to simplify cross-border finance.
By bringing BVNK’s technology in-house, Coinbase would gain direct control over settlement tools and potentially expand its reach across Europe. This integration could enhance Coinbase’s existing wallet and on-ramp products, opening up new markets in regions like the UK and the EU.
Regulatory Landscape and Future Opportunities
The timing for such an acquisition is particularly favorable. The recent passage of the Guiding and Establishing National Innovation for U.S. Stablecoins (GENIUS) Act has clarified the operational framework for stablecoins under federal oversight. This regulatory development has encouraged traditional financial institutions to explore blockchain-based payment solutions, presenting a ripe opportunity for Coinbase.
Analysts regard the GENIUS Act as a catalyst for renewed investment and consolidation within the sector. For Coinbase, embracing this shift could place stablecoins at the center of its long-term growth strategy. Should the BVNK acquisition proceed, it would represent one of the company’s most decisive moves to position digital dollars as mainstream payment tools, potentially redefining the landscape of digital finance.
