ELX Research Reveals Critical Gaps in Event Leadership Preparedness
The Event Leaders Exchange (ELX) has published a comprehensive study highlighting significant challenges and opportunities within the global events sector. The findings, detailed in the Future-Ready Leadership Whitepaper, are based on extensive surveys and interviews with senior event leaders from major global brands. The research underscores critical areas where event teams are prepared for future demands, as well as those requiring immediate attention.
One of the most striking revelations from the whitepaper is that only 5% of event programmes undergo innovation each year. This statistic points to a pressing need for enhanced experimentation and creative idea generation among event professionals. Without a commitment to innovation, the sector risks stagnation, potentially compromising its relevance in a rapidly evolving landscape.
In addition to innovation challenges, the research found that nearly one-third of event leaders lack clear Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) for their events or are uncertain about whether their KPIs are being met. This lack of clarity places teams at risk of budget cuts and diminished credibility within their organizations. Establishing measurable goals is essential for demonstrating the value of events and securing ongoing support.
The whitepaper also addresses the issue of training budgets, which remain under significant pressure. Spending on professional development is falling short of global recommendations, threatening long-term team growth and effectiveness. In a field that continually adapts to new technologies and methodologies, investing in training is crucial for maintaining a competitive edge.
Furthermore, the adoption of artificial intelligence (AI) in event planning is notably low. A third of event leaders reported that they do not utilize AI in their operations at all. Among those who do, the majority rely on it solely for copywriting support, rather than leveraging its full potential for analytics or audience engagement.
Nicola Kastner, CEO of ELX, emphasized the urgency of the findings, stating, “The data shows a clear call to action. If we want events to be seen as business-critical, we need to invest in our people, measure what matters and build cultures that embrace innovation – not just once in a while, but consistently.”
