Tanja Đikanović Unveils Vibrant Art at Cultural Centre Exhibition
A new chapter in the art scene has emerged with the opening of Tanja Đikanović’s first solo exhibition titled “Pjaca” at the Kulturno-informativni centar „Budo Tomović“ in Montenegro. This exhibition, which runs until November 23, 2023, features a series of works that blend emotional depth with a vivid portrayal of everyday life, inviting visitors into a world of color and rhythm.
Đikanović, who has balanced roles as a translator, educator, interior designer, and restorer, steps beyond her previous boundaries in this exhibition. Her paintings are described as a canvas filled with the “language” of color, representing an intimate awakening and a visual symphony of daily experiences.
Reviving the Essence of Life Through Art
The essence of Đikanović’s work lies not in merely depicting a piazza but in bringing it to life for the viewer. She describes her paintings as an invitation to enter a space filled with the pulse of colors and energy, where life and art intertwine. “The idea and initial impulse for this cycle were spontaneous, stemming from the purest emotion,” Đikanović shared in an interview with the local newspaper Pobjeda.
She reflects on the emotional journey that led to her artistic exploration, noting that the exhibition began as an attempt to fill a void following her father’s passing. “It was a test to enter something new, a new phase of life,” she said. The process was organic, evolving from the simple act of using her son’s art supplies. “This cycle started to build itself from those circles, lines, and spirals, creating a symphony of color that serves as an absolute antithesis to my previous, almost sterile life,” she added.
The Symbolism of the Piazza
For Đikanović, the piazza symbolizes one of the last truly authentic public spaces, representing the cyclical nature of life and its transformation through the seasons. She likens it to a tapestry woven from an abundance of fruits, vegetables, and flowers.
“Piazza is like a city, an open theater where performances change from day to day,” she explained. This motif, she argues, encapsulates a microcosm of life—chaotic, colorful, fragrant, transient, and enduring, all culminating in a beautiful imperfection.
In the accompanying catalog text, she elaborates on her concept of “Pjaca,” stating that it transcends mere representation and embodies a state of being. “Naming my ‘Pjaca’ a state reflects a connection to the awakening of something new,” she asserts. This feeling of complete immersion in a sea of colors is something she describes as sensual and indescribable.
Đikanović aims for her audience to not just see her artwork but to feel it. “I want them to experience the energy I have poured onto the canvas, to feel connected to it as if they themselves had painted it,” she said. Initial feedback indicates her desire has been fulfilled, with viewers resonating with the vibrant energy captured in her work.
The dynamic interplay of aromas, sounds, conversations, and the energy of Saturday mornings are translated into a visual language through her intuition. “I do not translate voices into paintings but into their visual equivalent, a rhythm, a quickened breath,” she noted, emphasizing that her canvas serves as a record of energy and the dynamics of that particular morning.
As Đikanović reflects on her multifaceted career, she embraces the intersection of her various roles. “Translation seeks precision in word choice, pedagogy involves listening to children’s emotions, and interior design requires knowledge of space. All these paths intertwine in a single thread, and the only way to untangle this knot of thoughts and emotions is through painting,” she explained.
The exhibition at the Kulturno-informativni centar is a testament to Đikanović’s artistic journey and her desire to share a piece of herself with the world. Visitors are encouraged to explore this vibrant display and experience the energy that flows through her creations, making a connection that transcends the canvas.
