North Wales MS Champions Stroke Awareness as Health Priority

A Member of the Senedd (MS) in North Wales has expressed strong support for prioritizing stroke prevention and treatment within the health sector. Sam Rowlands, a member of the Welsh Conservative Party, made this commitment during a meeting with representatives from the Stroke Association at an event held in the Senedd, located in Cardiff. This initiative comes in response to alarming statistics indicating that over 7,000 individuals in Wales suffer a stroke annually, making it the fourth leading cause of death in the region.
The Stroke Association, recognized as the only charity in the UK dedicated to providing lifelong support for stroke survivors and their families, is advocating for the Welsh Government to prioritize stroke on its health agenda. During the event, Rowlands emphasized the importance of raising awareness about strokes, which he described as a preventable disease.
“I am always pleased to support the work of the Stroke Association and help to raise awareness of this preventable disease,” stated Sam Rowlands MS. “I fully support their calls to make stroke a health priority as it is something we should all be aware of and know more about. It is important to note that with the right investment, stroke is preventable, treatable, and recoverable.”
The financial implications of stroke are significant. It is estimated that stroke costs NHS Wales approximately £220 million each year, with a total economic impact of around £1.63 billion. If no intervention occurs, these costs could escalate to an estimated £2.8 billion by 2035.
Currently, there are more than 70,000 stroke survivors living across Wales. The Stroke Association’s call for action not only highlights the need for improved healthcare strategies but also aims to foster greater public understanding of stroke prevention and recovery.
Efforts like those spearheaded by Rowlands could help shape the conversation around stroke care in Wales, potentially leading to more resources and support for those affected by this serious health issue. The push to make stroke a health priority reflects a growing recognition of its prevalence and the urgent need for action.
