Severe Weather Warning Issued as Strong Winds and Rain Approach

A severe weather warning has been issued for parts of South West England, with the Met Office forecasting strong winds and heavy rainfall that could disrupt travel and cause power outages. The yellow alert will take effect from 20:00 on Sunday, September 14, 2023, lasting until 18:00 on Monday, September 15, 2023. Residents are advised to prepare for challenging conditions as a significant weather system approaches.
The Met Office’s localized forecast indicates that heavy rain will begin in Gloucestershire around 14:00 on Sunday and is expected to continue until 18:00. Wind gusts in the region may reach up to 34 mph on Sunday afternoon, with potential increases to 48 mph by Monday lunchtime. In Bristol, heavy rain is anticipated to start around 13:00 on Sunday and last until 19:00, with gusts reaching 36 mph on Sunday and up to 50 mph on Monday. Somerset is also expected to experience heavy rain during specific periods on Sunday, with similar wind gusts forecast.
In its latest update, the Met Office explained, “Low pressure arriving on Sunday will squeeze the isobars together and bring an increasingly windy day.” Deputy Chief Meteorologist Stephen Kocher emphasized the intensity of the conditions, stating, “Strong west or southwesterly winds will arrive across coastal areas of South West England and Wales during Sunday evening, spreading inland and eastwards during Monday morning.” He noted that gusts of 45-55 mph are expected widely in inland areas, while coastal and hilly regions could see gusts reaching 60-70 mph at times.
The warning issued by the Met Office highlights the likelihood of travel disruption and power interruptions due to the strong winds. As the weather system moves in, there may be a brief period of clearer skies during the evening before conditions turn increasingly cloudy overnight. Minimum temperatures are projected to drop to 6 °C in rural areas.
Looking ahead, the outlook for Monday through Wednesday indicates that strong winds and blustery showers will persist on Monday, easing overnight. Tuesday is expected to offer a brief respite with brighter and drier conditions before another wet and windy system arrives on Wednesday.
Residents are urged to stay informed and take necessary precautions as this severe weather event unfolds.
