The prestigious Prix Versailles has unveiled its 2025 edition of the “World’s Most Beautiful Passenger Stations,” showcasing seven remarkable train stations that transcend functionality with architectural beauty. These stations have been recognized not just for their efficiency but for their aesthetic appeal, drawing visitors even if they are not traveling by train.

Among the highlighted stations, two remarkable entries are located in France, both part of the ambitious Grand Paris Express project. The newly constructed Saint-Denis Pleyel station, which opened on June 24, 2024, serves as the terminus for Line 14. Designed by renowned architect Kengo Kuma, this station spans nine levels and is anticipated to accommodate up to a quarter of a million passengers daily. Its design aims to rival that of Châtelet–Les Halles, the world’s largest underground station.

Another French gem, the Villejuif–Gustave Roussy station, debuted on January 18, 2025. This underground station, crafted by the architectural firm Dominique Perrault Architecture, features a distinctive cylindrical design with an open-air, multi-layered roof, often described as resembling an “upside-down skyscraper.” This innovative structure is also among the deepest passenger stations in France. One visitor praised it as a “masterpiece,” stating, “Public money well spent. It’s absolutely stunning!”

Crossing into Belgium, the historic Mons railway station has undergone a remarkable transformation since its original opening in 1841. The revamped station features a sleek design made of steel and bright white materials, creating a striking, cathedral-like walkway.

In Australia, Gadigal Station celebrates its cultural heritage, named after the Aboriginal people who originally inhabited the area. The station dazzles with vibrant tiles in colors such as yellow, purple, red, and blue, offering a vibrant welcome to commuters.

Over in China, Baiyun Station in Guangzhou received acclaim for its recent renovations, which have introduced shopping areas and an urban park. This expansive hub supports an impressive 24 high-speed train lines, six subway lines, and three bus terminals.

Saudi Arabia also made its mark with two entries from Riyadh. The KAFD Station, designed by UK-based Zaha Hadid Architects, opened in December 2024. The design draws inspiration from traditional mashrabiya screens and the natural patterns created by desert winds. Covering nearly 88,000 square feet, it represents a significant architectural achievement.

Finally, the Qasr Al Hokm Station, also in Riyadh, boasts a unique glass roof that reflects light throughout its expansive 211,000 square feet of space. Designed in 2012, it features an indoor garden, further enhancing its appeal as a beautiful transit hub.

These seven train stations not only serve as critical transportation links but also stand as testaments to innovative design and urban planning, highlighting a global commitment to creating spaces that inspire and captivate.
