Key Gloucester Bridge Reopens After 12-Day Closure Chaos

The Netheridge Swing Bridge in Hempsted, Gloucester, has officially reopened following a twelve-day closure that left many local residents and businesses frustrated. The bridge, located on Secunda Way, was closed on September 1, 2023, coinciding with the return to school after the summer holidays. It reopened slightly ahead of schedule on September 12, 2023, after extensive repair work that began on May 27.
The closure resulted in significant traffic disruptions, with motorists facing a lengthy 7.5-mile diversion. The repairs, initially expected to be completed by May 31, encountered multiple delays throughout the summer due to “operational issues.” Despite the announcement of an earlier reopening, many residents expressed dissatisfaction with the timing of the closure.
Community Reactions to the Closure
Local responses to the bridge’s closure have been overwhelmingly critical. One resident remarked, “Had the whole of the summer holidays to finish the repair and thought the first school week of the new term would be the best time to start – absolute muppets.” Another individual voiced concerns about the impact on businesses, stating, “I hate to think what detrimental damage it’s done to businesses the past two weeks.”
The sentiment was echoed by others who questioned the decision-making process behind the timing of the repairs. “You had the entire summer to sort it but thought it was a good idea to do it when school reopened,” said another frustrated local. Complaints about the quality of the repairs also surfaced, with one resident expressing worry that the bridge could soon face issues again: “Tarmac feels terrible to drive across.”
Official Statements and Commitment to Improvement
In response to the backlash, officials from the Canal and River Trust, which oversees the bridge, acknowledged the inconvenience caused by the closure. “We know how disruptive the closure has been, and we want to sincerely thank everyone for their patience during this time,” said a spokesperson. They emphasized their commitment to ensuring the safety and reliability of the bridge moving forward.
The spokesperson further stated, “We deeply regret the inconvenience caused — especially to residents and businesses in Hempsted and surrounding areas who felt the impact most.” They noted the dedication of their teams who worked continuously to complete the repairs efficiently.
Despite the reopening, the local community remains wary of potential future disruptions. As residents resume their daily routines, the hope is that the Netheridge Swing Bridge will serve as a reliable route without further complications.
