Guesthouse Owner Urges Support for Small Hospitality Sector
The owner of a guesthouse in Cambridge is calling for government support for small hospitality businesses ahead of the upcoming Autumn Budget. Inga, who manages her establishment on Tenison Road, expressed concerns about the financial pressures faced by small operators due to rising staffing costs, high commissions from booking platforms, and escalating overheads such as utilities and maintenance.
“Running a guesthouse is incredibly rewarding, but it’s also a constant balancing act,” Inga stated. She highlighted the challenges of managing expenses, noting that after covering wages, cleaning services, and energy bills, there is often very little profit remaining. “I’m hopeful the Chancellor will recognise that small, independent hospitality businesses need relief, not more costs,” she added.
Cambridge’s tourism economy relies significantly on family-run accommodations, which offer visitors a warm and personal experience. “Guests love staying in independent places like ours because of the character, attention to detail, and genuine hospitality,” Inga explained. She emphasised the importance of these establishments in representing the heart of local tourism.
Yet, Inga cautioned that every new financial burden makes it increasingly difficult for small businesses to thrive. “I really hope this Budget supports small businesses rather than pushing them to the brink,” she said.
Inga is advocating for specific measures such as rate relief and adjustments to VAT to ensure that independent guesthouses can continue making valuable contributions to their local economies. By providing memorable stays for visitors, these businesses play a crucial role in the tourism sector, yet they require continued support to maintain their operations in the face of rising costs.
As policymakers prepare for the upcoming budget discussions, the voices of operators like Inga will be essential in shaping decisions that impact the future of small hospitality businesses across the region.
