Guardiola Faces Tough Decisions Ahead of Man City’s Opener
As the Premier League season kicks off, Pep Guardiola confronts significant decisions for Manchester City’s opening match against Wolverhampton Wanderers on August 12, 2023. With several notable signings, including Rayan Ait-Nouri, Rayan Cherki, Tijjani Reijnders, and James Trafford, the manager faces the challenge of selecting his starting XI while also determining which players to exclude from the matchday squad.
The recent loan of Jack Grealish to Everton has slightly eased Guardiola’s dilemma, reducing the squad size. Nevertheless, he still has numerous options available. Guardiola has consistently expressed his preference for a smaller squad, emphasizing the difficulties he faced during the latter part of the previous season when senior players were left out of the matchday lineup.
Guardiola’s challenge is intensified by the potential absence of midfielder Rodri, who, although available, is not expected to be fully fit until post-September international break. Additionally, Mateo Kovacic is currently sidelined until October, further complicating the selection process.
In a statement made in May, Guardiola voiced his concerns about maintaining a large squad. He stated, “I said to the club I don’t want that [a bigger squad]. I don’t want to leave five or six players in the freezer. I don’t want that. I will quit. Make a shorter squad, I will stay. It’s impossible for my soul to [tell] my players in the tribune [stands] that they cannot play.”
The situation became increasingly pressing when City took a squad of 22 players to Italy for a friendly against Palermo, exceeding the maximum of 20 allowed for a matchday. This total did not account for four players—Rodri, Phil Foden, Josko Gvardiol, and Claudio Echeverri—who remained at home due to fitness concerns. Including these players would elevate the total to 26, leaving Guardiola with the tough choice of who to drop.
The final decision on the squad will not only impact the players involved but also set the tone for the season ahead. Guardiola’s commitment to a smaller, more cohesive group is clear, but the challenge of balancing talent and squad size remains a significant task as the team prepares for their season opener.
