Chido Obi Shines as Manchester United U21s Beat Rochdale 2-0
Manchester United’s Under-21 team secured a convincing 2-0 victory against Rochdale on Tuesday night, showcasing the talents of Chido Obi, who opened the scoring early in the match. The young forward capitalized on a defensive mistake, reacting swiftly to net the first goal just ten minutes in. This performance is a testament to the development strategy put in place by head coach Ruben Amorim, who aims to elevate the academy system.
Before the match, a minute’s silence was observed in memory of Rhys Bennett’s father, with players donning black armbands in tribute. Bennett, who was present in the stands with family, has been granted compassionate leave, highlighting the supportive environment cultivated by the club.
United’s U21s faced Rochdale as part of their National League Cup campaign, having experienced a rocky start to the season. Following an abandoned match against Tamworth due to a serious injury to Sekou Kone, the team also suffered a defeat against Brackley in September. This match against Rochdale was crucial for obtaining momentum, especially as the opposition had made significant changes to their squad in pursuit of promotion to the Football League.
The atmosphere was lively as Obi stepped off the coach to greet a young fan seeking a photograph. At just 17 years old, Obi’s reputation is growing; he made seven appearances for the first team last season but has focused primarily on academy fixtures this term. With fewer opportunities for first-team play following an early exit in the Carabao Cup and the absence of European competition, Obi’s path to the senior squad hinges on his continued scoring prowess at the U21 level.
Obi’s early goal set the tone, but Jim Thwaites emerged as the standout player of the match, demonstrating exceptional midfield skills. Thwaites, known for his forward-passing technique, orchestrated play effectively, notably assisting Bendito Mantato down the right wing before halftime. His proficiency at set pieces could prove advantageous, as the Premier League has seen a resurgence in the effectiveness of dead-ball situations over the last year.
By halftime, United held a deserved one-goal lead, having dominated possession and failed to allow Rochdale any significant threat on goalkeeper William Murdock. Head coach Travis Binnion expressed satisfaction with his team’s performance, particularly in the wake of Obi’s development. Binnion noted that while Obi excels in finishing, there are areas for improvement, especially in his pressing and link-up play, which he emphasized throughout the match.
This match also marked the season debut for Godwill Kukonki, who performed admirably on the left side of central defense after participating in first-team training. Meanwhile, Diego Leon, who joined from Paraguay over the summer, is gradually acclimatizing to his new environment, having scored his first goal for the club last weekend.
In a repeat of last year’s fixture, the U21s managed a narrow victory of 1-0 at Rochdale’s Crown Oil Arena. However, this time they improved their performance, sealing the match with a late goal from James Scanlon during injury time. With this win, Manchester United’s U21s are now off to a strong start in the National League Cup, demonstrating their potential and resilience as they look to build on this success throughout the season.
