Ivan Vujović, the president of the Social Democratic Party (SDP) and a key leader of the European Coalition, has responded sharply to comments made by Serbian President Aleksandar Vučić. Vujović’s remarks, posted on social media platform X on October 29, 2025, address Vučić’s claims regarding nationalist sentiments towards Serbia.

Vujović criticized Vučić for what he described as a “superficial narrative” suggesting that opposition to his policies equates to hatred for the Serbian people. He stated, “That shallow story cannot pass even in Ćačak,” referring to a city in Serbia, emphasizing that Serbs are a friendly people and Serbia is a friendly country. Vujović expressed his admiration for the youth in Serbia who are resisting Vučić’s governance, stating, “I deeply appreciate what today’s Serbian youth are doing in defiance of his dictatorship, while I simultaneously despise any form of dictatorship.”

In his statement, Vujović also suggested that Vučić has a history of being subservient to the former Montenegrin leader Milo Đukanović. He remarked, “Even the sparrows know that he has long been a lackey of Milo Đukanović.” This comment implies a longstanding political allegiance that Vujović claims undermines Vučić’s current leadership stance.

Vujović’s remarks reflect a broader political tension within Serbia as opposition parties criticize Vučić’s administration for authoritarian practices. As Serbia approaches future elections, the dynamics among political leaders will likely continue to evolve, with Vujović positioning himself as a prominent critic of Vučić.

The discourse surrounding Vučić’s governance highlights ongoing societal divisions within Serbia, particularly in terms of political allegiance and public sentiment towards leadership. As the situation develops, it remains to be seen how these critiques will impact both Vučić’s administration and the broader political landscape in the region.
