A 25-year-old Singaporean is under investigation by Singapore Customs for allegedly failing to declare a collection of Pokémon trading cards valued at over £22,500. The incident occurred on October 10, 2023, at Changi Airport, where officials discovered the cards during a routine baggage check.

During the inspection, officers from the Immigration and Checkpoints Authority (ICA) directed the man to a screening area. He reportedly informed them that he had “nothing” to declare. However, a scan of his luggage revealed a substantial quantity of assorted Pokémon cards hidden within. Following this discovery, the case was referred to Singapore Customs for further investigation, although officials have not released additional details regarding the matter.

Regulations on Duty-Free Items

In a Facebook post dated October 14, 2023, the ICA reminded travelers of their obligations when bringing items into Singapore. All individuals must declare and pay duty on dutiable or taxable items purchased abroad that exceed their duty-free or Goods and Services Tax (GST) relief allowances. For travelers uncertain about what needs to be declared, the ICA suggested using the Red Channel or visiting the Singapore Customs Tax Payment Office.

According to Singaporean law, all goods entering the country are subject to a 9 percent GST. Travelers returning after trips of 48 hours or more can claim relief on goods valued up to $500, while those returning from shorter trips are entitled to only $100 in relief. Notably, crew members and long-term pass holders are not eligible for these exemptions. Goods exceeding duty-free limits that are not declared may incur financial penalties or legal action.

Value of Pokémon Trading Cards

The rise in value of Pokémon trading cards has drawn significant attention in recent years. Rare cards have become highly sought-after collectibles, attracting both hobbyists and investors alike. According to analytics firm Card Ladder, the value of these cards has surged by 3,800 percent since 2004, far surpassing gains in traditional stock markets, as reported by the Straits Times.

This incident highlights the ongoing challenges faced by customs authorities in monitoring high-value collectibles and ensuring compliance with import regulations. As the popularity of such items continues to grow, travelers must remain vigilant and informed about their responsibilities when entering Singapore.
