Protests Erupt in Niksic as Officials Celebrate Controversial Events

Tensions flared in Niksic, Montenegro, as members of the Democratic Party of Socialists (DPS) and European Socialist (ES) celebrated an event that sparked significant controversy. The gathering, held at the Hotel Onogošt, included a display of the slogan “Za dom spremni” which translates to “For Home, Ready,” a phrase with historical ties to fascist movements.
The celebration took place on the night of July 12, 2023, following a day marked by protests in Podgorica, where demonstrators expressed their discontent through whistles and chants of “E viva (vero) Montenegro.” The gathering was characterized as a response to the public dissent, with attendees showcasing their allegiance to the ideologies associated with Sekula Drljević, a historical figure known for his controversial nationalist views.
According to a statement from the Nikšić branch of the New Serbian Democracy (NSD), the event highlighted the troubling resurgence of nationalist sentiments. They condemned the celebration, emphasizing that the phrase “Za dom spremni” and similar ideologies would not become an official stance in Niksic or Montenegro. The NSD asserted that the gathering was a deliberate attempt to provoke local citizens, particularly those of Serbian descent, and called for accountability.
The NSD’s statement further criticized the silence of non-governmental organizations (NGOs) on the matter, suggesting that they either disapprove of or are indifferent to the nationalist rhetoric being propagated. The organization pledged to pursue legal measures aimed at reclaiming public spaces and symbols that they believe should not be associated with such ideologies.
Local activists and community members have voiced their concerns about the potential implications of these celebrations, suggesting they could exacerbate divisions within society. As tensions continue to rise, the NSD has vowed to ensure that the historical context of Niksic is respected and that its legacy is not overshadowed by extremist ideologies.
In a broader context, this incident reflects ongoing struggles within Montenegro regarding national identity and the tensions between different ethnic groups. The NSD expressed their commitment to preserving the values of inclusivity and respect for all citizens, regardless of their background.
As the situation develops, it remains crucial for Montenegrin society to engage in dialogue aimed at fostering understanding and reconciliation, rather than division. The events at the Hotel Onogošt serve as a stark reminder of the challenges that lie ahead in navigating the complexities of national identity in contemporary Montenegro.
