A shoplifter from Alton has been sentenced to prison after committing another theft just two days following a suspended sentence. On July 27, 2023, Stuart Austin, aged 50, stole a barbecue valued at £300 from Tesco Bordon, marking a swift breach of his legal obligations.

Austin’s recent history of theft led to a police investigation, resulting in his arrest earlier in July. On July 24, he was charged with a total of 13 shoplifting offences. He subsequently pleaded guilty and was sentenced the next day by Basingstoke Magistrates to a 26-week prison term, suspended for 12 months, alongside additional requirements intended to deter further criminal activity.

Despite the consequences laid out by the court, Austin reoffended within a mere 48 hours. Following the barbecue theft, authorities launched a renewed effort to locate him. A spokesperson for Hampshire Police stated, “With the case file prepared for court, we began efforts to locate Austin.”

After receiving intelligence suggesting he was at his home in Alton on August 9, police attempted to contact him. When he did not answer the door, they exercised their authority under Section 17 of the Police and Criminal Evidence Act, gaining entry to apprehend him.

Austin reappeared before Basingstoke Magistrates on August 11, where his suspended sentence was activated and extended by an additional 14 days. This adjustment resulted in a total incarceration of 28 weeks.

In a separate note, East Hampshire police are seeking information from residents who may have encountered cold callers offering tree surgery services. They encourage anyone with relevant doorbell footage or images to contact them at 101 or through their website.
