Montenegro’s EU Membership Expected Under Future Government

Montenegro’s path toward European Union membership is anticipated to take shape under its future government, specifically the 45th government led by Milojko Spajić. This assertion was made by Vasilije Čarapić, the head of the parliamentary club for the Party of European Socialists (PES). He indicated that the country could officially join the EU as early as 2028, following the general elections scheduled for 2027.

During a recent statement, Čarapić noted, “The accession agreement for Montenegro will be signed by Milojko Spajić during this term.” His comments respond to remarks made by Zlatko Vujović in an interview with the news outlet Pobjeda, where Vujović suggested a shift in political rhetoric regarding EU negotiations.

Čarapić criticized Vujović’s statements as indicative of a significant change in political narrative. He explained that earlier claims suggested the current government would be unable to finalize negotiations by the end of 2026. Now, however, the narrative has adapted to assert that while the government can complete negotiations, it may not be able to facilitate Montenegro’s accession to the EU.
