Medvedev Warns of Consequences Following Trump’s Tomahawk Threat
Former Russian president Dmitry Medvedev has issued a stark warning regarding the potential consequences of the United States supplying Tomahawk missiles to Ukraine. His remarks follow comments made by Donald Trump, who suggested that long-range missiles could be offered to Kyiv if Russian President Vladimir Putin does not bring an end to the ongoing conflict.
On Sunday, Trump reiterated his position, stating, “Yeah, I might tell him (Putin), if the war is not settled, we may very well do it.” He added, “We may not, but we may do it… do they want to have Tomahawks going in their direction? I don’t think so.” This statement has provoked a strong reaction from Medvedev, who has been vocal in his criticisms of U.S. foreign policy on social media.
Medvedev’s Nuclear Implications
In a post on Telegram, Medvedev emphasized the difficulty in distinguishing between conventional and nuclear Tomahawk missiles once they are launched. He suggested that the implications of such military supplies could compel a nuclear response from Russia. “How should Russia respond? Exactly!” Medvedev stated, underscoring the gravity of the situation.
He expressed skepticism about Trump’s assertions, saying, “One can only hope that this is another empty threat… Like sending nuclear submarines closer to Russia.” His comments refer to Trump’s earlier claims in August that he ordered two nuclear submarines to advance toward Russian waters in reaction to Medvedev’s comments about the potential for conflict.
Putin has previously indicated that supplying Ukraine with Tomahawk missiles—capable of striking targets up to 2,500 kilometers (approximately 1,550 miles) away, including locations within European Russia—would irreparably harm U.S.-Russia relations.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky assured that, should the U.S. decide to provide Tomahawk missiles, they would be used strictly for military objectives and not aimed at civilian targets within Russia. This statement attempts to alleviate fears surrounding the potential escalation of military tensions in the region.
The situation remains fluid, with both sides poised for further developments as discussions about military support continue. As the conflict evolves, the international community watches closely, aware of the high stakes involved in any changes to military assistance.
