Hollie Strano Lawsuit Highlights Stigma of Addiction After WKYC Exit

Hollie Strano, a prominent meteorologist and on-air personality, was terminated from WKYC Channel 3 in September 2024 after 22 years with the station. Her dismissal followed a public incident in November 2023, when she was charged with operating a vehicle under the influence. Strano later pleaded guilty, but her termination has raised significant questions regarding the treatment of addiction and recovery in the workplace.

Strano publicly addressed her dismissal, stating that WKYC, along with its parent company, Tegna, chose to end her employment after she openly shared her recovery journey from alcoholism on social media. She asserted that this decision underscores the persistent stigma that individuals face regarding addiction and their efforts to recover. Neither WKYC nor Tegna has provided additional comments on the matter.

Legal Action and Public Response

The termination has attracted public scrutiny, particularly after Strano filed a lawsuit against WKYC. The legal claim alleges wrongful termination based on two main points: her decision to discuss her sobriety publicly and her promotion of a wellness product. The case is currently ongoing, and experts in employment law note that wrongful termination suits related to health issues or public statements often involve complex legal considerations.

In her lawsuit, Strano highlights that her efforts to promote mental health awareness through her podcast and social media platforms were part of what led to her dismissal. Employment law specialists indicate that successful cases in this area could result in financial compensation or public accountability for the employer. Damages in such cases can vary significantly, with estimates suggesting that they could exceed £100,000 (approximately $132,000).

A New Chapter in Broadcasting

Despite the challenges she has faced, Strano has secured a new role in broadcasting. In August 2025, she joined Mix 94.1, a radio station located in Stark County, where she delivers hourly weather updates. Her forecast segments air daily from 06:00 to 22:00. The station commended her extensive experience, referring to her as an Emmy-winning mental health advocate with over two decades in broadcasting.

Strano expressed her enthusiasm for her new position on social media, stating, “Let’s do this Stark County! So much love for you, Canton!” In addition to her work at Mix 94.1, she produces weather forecasts for radio stations in Georgia and Alabama. She has described it as an honour to share her forecasts from her hometown with southern audiences.

Alongside her radio work, Strano hosts a podcast titled Abruptly Authentic with Hollie Strano. The program, available on platforms like YouTube, Apple Podcasts, and Spotify, features personal anecdotes, mental health discussions, and interviews that often centre on themes of resilience and recovery.

While her public persona has shifted since her departure from WKYC, Strano continues to advocate for addiction awareness and openly shares her journey on social media. Her growing audience reflects a strong connection with listeners who appreciate her candid approach to discussing mental health issues.

Strano’s situation raises important discussions regarding employment rights and workplace responses to addiction. As legal proceedings unfold, many are watching closely to see how the case develops and what implications it may have for others in similar circumstances. Though she is no longer with WKYC, Strano has embraced a new path in broadcasting, combining local and regional radio with her advocacy work, and remains committed to sharing her story of recovery.
