Ayan Mukerji Exits ‘Dhoom 4’ as Focus Shifts to ‘Brahmastra’ Sequel

Filmmaker Ayan Mukerji has stepped back from directing the much-anticipated action film Dhoom 4, a project under Yash Raj Films (YRF), following reported creative differences. The decision was influenced by a lack of alignment between Mukerji’s vision for the film and the studio’s expectations, as stated by Bollywood Hungama.
Mukerji, who has gained recognition for his work on films such as Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani and Brahmastra, was in talks to helm the next installment of the popular franchise, which is expected to feature actor Ranbir Kapoor. The director reportedly felt constrained by the existing script, penned by Shridhar Raghavan, and preferred to have a more significant creative influence rather than merely executing a pre-defined plan.
Creative Differences Lead to Amicable Split
Sources indicate that prior to his departure, Mukerji engaged in multiple discussions with YRF head Aditya Chopra and Kapoor, both of whom were supportive of his decision. Insiders describe the separation as “completely amicable,” suggesting that the director’s exit will not halt progress on Dhoom 4. YRF plans to move forward with the project under a different director, and there may be a reevaluation of casting choices, although reports initially suggested Kapoor had reserved dates for the film.
Despite stepping away from Dhoom 4, Mukerji is redirecting his focus to his long-standing passion project, the Brahmastra series. He is in the process of developing Brahmastra: Part Two – Dev, a sequel to the 2022 fantasy epic. Initially anticipated to begin production sooner, the filming is now expected to start in 2026.
Expanding the Astraverse
As Mukerji works on the sequel, sources reveal that he aims to deepen the storytelling within the Astraverse, incorporating richer elements of mythology, drama, and spectacle. The shift back to this franchise reflects Mukerji’s commitment to creating a unique cinematic experience that resonates with audiences.
The developments surrounding Dhoom 4 and Brahmastra: Part Two – Dev illustrate the dynamic nature of the film industry, where creative visions must align for successful collaborations. As Mukerji embarks on this new chapter, fans eagerly await the next installments in both franchises, hoping for innovative storytelling and captivating performances.
