Lawmaker Condemns Threats Against Journalist Jovana Jovanović
Independent lawmaker Jevrosima Pejović has condemned the recent threats made against journalist Jovana Jovanović from the newspaper Vijesti. This alarming incident highlights a troubling trend in Montenegro, where attacks on journalists are becoming increasingly common. Pejović emphasized that media professionals face daily pressures, intimidation, and attempts to silence their voices.
In her statement, Pejović asserted that media freedom is not merely a principle but a fundamental component of a democratic society. It is crucial for citizens to receive accurate information and understand the truth. She remarked, “When a journalist who exposes crime and corruption becomes a target of threats, it endangers not only her but the entire society.”
The lawmaker expressed her concern that such actions send a clear message of intimidation. She called on institutions to demonstrate that the law will not waver in the face of threats. Pejović insisted on the urgent need for a decisive response from the relevant authorities, including the identification and prosecution of those responsible for the threats against Jovanović.
Furthermore, she highlighted that every threat against journalists constitutes an attack on truth, justice, and freedom. “It must be clear that this kind of violence will not be tolerated,” Pejović stated, underscoring the importance of protecting journalists in their pursuit of truth.
As Montenegro continues to grapple with issues of press freedom and the safety of journalists, the response to these threats will be closely watched. The need for robust protection mechanisms for media workers is more pressing than ever, as their role in promoting transparency and accountability becomes increasingly vital.
Pejović’s condemnation reflects a growing recognition of the challenges faced by the media in Montenegro and the imperative of safeguarding their rights. The international community will likely monitor this situation to ensure that journalists can operate without fear of violence or intimidation.
