James McDonald Returns to Hong Kong Racing with High Hopes
Fans of horse racing in Hong Kong can look forward to an exciting day at Happy Valley on November 1, 2023, as the venue hosts a nine-race program starting at 10:40 AM. Among the highlights is the return of renowned jockey James McDonald, who has signed a short-term contract that will keep him in the region until just before Christmas. The three-time LONGINES World’s Best Jockey Award winner has maintained a strong following among fans, rivaling reigning champion Zac Purton.
McDonald has built a reputation as one of the sport’s leading jockeys, with over 100 Group One victories worldwide. His previous stints in Hong Kong have made a lasting impression on local racing enthusiasts. Last season, he achieved 26 wins and 28 places from 121 rides, boasting a win strike rate of 21% that placed him just behind Purton.
Key Races and Competitors
At Happy Valley, McDonald will ride several horses, including the in-form Wrote A New Page in the Hing Yip Handicap, scheduled for 2:15 PM. However, his most notable ride is on Star Figure, trained by Jamie Richards, in the first division of the Fat Tseung Handicap at 12:40 PM. The partnership between McDonald and Richards dates back to their successful tenure in New Zealand, where they won numerous significant races together.
Star Figure, a four-year-old son of Deep Field, enters the race following an unfortunate defeat to King Oberon. In that race, he narrowly attempted a run along the rails but did not have the opportunity to challenge the winner effectively. His dedication to the sport and improved performance positions him as a strong contender in this race.
The competition is fierce, with Robot Lucky Star likely to be the favorite. Having recently secured a convincing victory over five furlongs at Sha Tin, this horse steps up in distance, making the race even more competitive. Purton will continue his partnership with this speedster, presenting a significant challenge, especially as he concedes seven pounds to Star Figure.
Additional Contenders
Another horse worth noting is Turin Warrior, who is set to compete in the Chinese General Chamber of Commerce 125th Anniversary Cup at 12:10 PM. Known for his tendency to lose races narrowly, Turin Warrior has previously won two races last season, including one over the same course and distance but at a higher handicap mark. His recent performance indicated potential, finishing strong despite an unideal position earlier in the race.
With Vincent Ho piloting Turin Warrior, who was also aboard for his last victory, there is optimism that this seasoned competitor could surprise in what appears to be a relatively average field.
As McDonald makes his anticipated return to the Hong Kong racing scene, fans and bettors alike will be closely watching how his rides unfold. With a mix of seasoned competitors and promising newcomers, this race day is set to deliver excitement and possibly new stories of triumph.
