Mecole Hardman, a key player for the Kansas City Chiefs during their Super Bowl LVIII victory, has been released by the Green Bay Packers without playing a single snap in the 2025 NFL season. Hardman’s game-winning touchdown against the San Francisco 49ers secured the Chiefs’ second consecutive Super Bowl title, marking a high point in his career.

After an injury-plagued 2024 season, where he participated in only about 10% of the offensive snaps, Hardman signed a one-year, $1.5 million contract with the Packers in March 2025, shortly after his 27th birthday. He aimed to recover from a knee injury that had sidelined him the previous year. Unfortunately, his time in Green Bay did not unfold as planned.

On August 26, Hardman was released during the final roster cuts but was quickly re-signed to the practice squad the following day. Despite this, he was not elevated to the active roster during the first three games of the season. On September 26, the Packers officially released him again, leaving Hardman in search of a new team.

Packers Make Changes Following Loss

In the wake of a surprising loss to the Cleveland Browns, the Packers announced several roster changes on September 23. Among these moves was the signing of rookie wide receiver Jakobie Keeney-James to their practice squad, filling the vacancy left by Hardman. Keeney-James, who previously played for the University of Massachusetts, had originally entered the league as an undrafted free agent with the Detroit Lions in May 2025.

During his college career, Keeney-James recorded 111 receptions for 1,664 yards and 10 touchdowns over 49 games. He will don the number 84 jersey for the Packers as he aims to make an impact on his new team.

Hardman’s Legacy with the Chiefs

Despite his recent challenges, Hardman’s contributions to the Chiefs were significant. Selected in the second round of the 2019 NFL Draft, he emerged as one of quarterback Patrick Mahomes’s trusted targets. Over his tenure with Kansas City, Hardman accumulated 2,590 yards and 19 touchdowns.

In his rookie season, he showcased his potential by catching six touchdowns and gaining 538 yards. The following years saw him continue to excel, with a career-high 693 yards in 2021. Hardman played a crucial role in the Chiefs’ playoff runs, contributing touchdowns in consecutive seasons and earning two Super Bowl rings.

As he navigates this unexpected turn in his career, Hardman remains a talented player looking for an opportunity to prove himself once more in the NFL. With his track record and experience, he may attract interest from teams seeking depth at the wide receiver position.
