Many UK Adults Lacking Essential Vitamins and Minerals

A recent analysis of the UK’s dietary habits reveals that many adults are deficient in three essential nutrients: selenium, iodine, and riboflavin, also known as vitamin B2. The findings, based on the Government’s National Diet and Nutrition Survey, indicate that these deficiencies may not be widely recognized but could significantly impact public health.

According to Bridget Benelam of the British Nutrition Foundation, the results suggest a concerning trend: “As a nation, we’re not eating a balanced diet.” This year’s survey shows an increase in deficiencies since the last report in 2016. Common knowledge often highlights deficiencies in vitamin D, folate (vitamin B9), iron, calcium, and potassium, but the lack of selenium, iodine, and riboflavin has emerged as a significant concern.

The increase in nutrient deficiencies may correlate with the rising trend of eliminating meat and dairy from diets, according to Dr. Emma Derbyshire, a public health nutritionist at the Health & Food Supplements Information Service.

Selenium’s Role in Immune Function

Selenium is crucial for maintaining a robust immune system. Dr. Derbyshire emphasizes the importance of this often-overlooked mineral. “We often concentrate on things like vitamin D and folate. Selenium is also important to consider.” A deficiency in selenium can lead to serious health issues, including increased susceptibility to infections, fatigue, muscle weakness, and poor sperm quality in men. Alarmingly, nearly half of adults surveyed did not meet the recommended dietary levels for selenium.

Sources of selenium include meat, fish, eggs, Brazil nuts, lentils, and grains. Concerns have been raised in Parliament regarding low selenium levels in certain areas of British farmland, which may be contributing to the nutrient’s deficiency in crops.

Iodine: Essential for Thyroid Function

Iodine is another critical nutrient, with approximately 13 percent of adults failing to meet recommended intake levels. Urine tests conducted as part of the survey have indicated a 25 percent decline in iodine levels over the past decade. This mineral is predominantly found in seafood and dairy products.

Dr. Derbyshire notes the implications of this deficiency: “If we’re moving towards plant-based milks, many of them are fortified with iodine, but quite often it’s enough to get a health claim, but it’s not the amount that we need for our health.” A lack of iodine can lead to tiredness in adults and has severe consequences for pregnant women, as it is vital for fetal brain development. “A shortfall could have implications for the next generation,” she added.

Riboflavin, or vitamin B2, is also highlighted as a nutrient of concern. This vitamin is essential for energy metabolism, and its deficiency can result in fatigue. The survey indicated that 15 percent of adults were not getting enough riboflavin, with the figure climbing to one-third among teenage girls.

Benelam stresses the importance of balanced nutrition, particularly for those avoiding meat and animal products. “If you don’t consume animal products, there are a few vitamins and minerals that will be harder to get,” she explained. “If you’re following healthy eating advice where you’re having a balance across all of the main food groups, then with the exception of vitamin D, you should be able to get everything you need.”

The findings of this analysis were published in the medical journal Food and Nutrition Sciences, highlighting the urgent need for increased awareness and dietary adjustments to address these deficiencies in the UK population. As nutritional habits evolve, ensuring adequate intake of these essential nutrients becomes paramount for maintaining overall health and well-being.
