Montenegro Party Condemns Police Action Against Peaceful Protesters
Crnogorska stranka, a newly established political party in Montenegro, has strongly condemned the actions of law enforcement against peaceful citizens protesting in Gorica. The party describes the police and prosecutorial response as a repressive and politically motivated operation targeting individuals expressing their dissent.
The protest involved approximately 35 citizens who gathered to voice their concerns regarding the awarding of Montenegro’s highest state honor to an individual known for denying antifascism and promoting ideologies that directly oppose the country’s antifascist foundations. The party refrained from naming the individual, emphasizing that the issue lies not in the name itself but in the political symbolism it represents.
According to a statement from Crnogorska stranka, the only “crime” committed by these citizens was their audacity to raise their voices against the perceived humiliation of Montenegro and the systematic undermining of its state, civic, and national dignity. The party views the actions of the judiciary and police as a blatant attack on freedom of expression, the right to protest, and fundamental democratic values.
Call for Civil Resistance
The statement from the party urged citizens to engage in a civilized, democratic, and decisive resistance against policies of repression, violence, and the erasure of Montenegro’s identity. The party declared, “We must not retreat or be humiliated. We did not withdraw even in much tougher historical circumstances, and we will not do so today against the instrumentalized hordes from Belgrade and Moscow.” The sentiment reflects a strong commitment to maintaining Montenegro as a nation of free individuals grounded in antifascist values.
The protest and subsequent police response highlight a growing concern among citizens regarding the state of democracy and human rights in Montenegro. As tensions rise, the actions of the authorities and the responses from political entities like Crnogorska stranka will likely shape the political landscape in the coming months.
The party’s stance resonates with many who fear that the ideals of freedom and dignity are under threat in Montenegro. The situation raises significant questions about the future of political discourse and civic engagement in the region as citizens seek to preserve their rights and uphold the democratic principles they believe are essential to the nation’s identity.
