Tommy Coyle and Neil Hudgell Honoured with Freedom of Hull
Tommy Coyle and Neil Hudgell have been awarded the prestigious Freedom of the City of Kingston upon Hull, recognizing their significant contributions to the local community. The ceremony took place at Hull’s Guildhall on November 20, 2023, where both men were honored for their dedication and impact.
The nominations for the award came earlier this year from Labour councillors, with the council approving both nominees shortly thereafter. During the ceremony, Lord Mayor Cllr Cheryl Payne highlighted the profound community contributions made by both Coyle and Hudgell, stating, “They’ve both given back so much to the communities that made them.”
Coyle, a former professional boxer, shifted his focus from the ring to community service after a successful athletic career. His nomination was supported by Cllr Shane McMurray, who delivered a heartfelt speech during the event. Cllr McMurray emphasized the importance of Coyle’s roots in Hull, stating, “Tommy’s story is one rooted in Hull, built on hard work, humility, and heart.”
Coyle’s upbringing in a family connected to the city’s historic fruit market instilled in him the values of discipline and community. Following his boxing career, he established gyms and youth projects, aiming to provide safe and positive environments for local young people. Cllr McMurray noted, “It’s what came after the gloves were hung up that truly defines him.”
The leader of Hull City Council, Cllr Mike Ross, described the honour as “a very fitting award” for Coyle, suggesting that his work in the city is just beginning. “I don’t think we’ve seen the last of Tommy’s work in the city,” Ross added, expressing optimism about Coyle’s future contributions.
In receiving the honour, Coyle expressed pride in the recognition and his plans for the city. “It’s a tremendous honour to receive such an award, and we’ve got some great plans for the city that I’m really proud to be from,” he stated. He also acknowledged his companion in recognition, saying, “I’m also really honoured to stand alongside my dear friend, Neil Hudgell.”
Neil Hudgell, a solicitor, philanthropist, and owner of Hull Kingston Rovers (Hull KR), was also nominated for the award by Cllr Daren Hale. Hudgell’s contributions extend beyond sports; he has played a vital role in the legal field, particularly noted for representing victims of the Post Office Horizon scandal. Cllr Hale praised Hudgell’s commitment to the club and the community, remarking, “I’m delighted all the work Neil has put in over the years finally got the reward Rovers deserve.”
During the ceremony, Cllr Hale highlighted the significance of Hudgell’s legal practice, noting, “Access to the law in this country often depends on the size of your wallet, but the good thing about Neil and the firm he runs is that it has enabled people to get justice.”
Upon receiving his award, Hudgell expressed gratitude to the council for their ongoing support of Hull KR and acknowledged the contributions of both current and previous administrations.
The awarding of the Freedom of the City of Hull to both Coyle and Hudgell reflects their enduring commitment to their community and their roles as positive influences in Hull.
