Suranne Jones, known for her captivating performances, is set to star in Netflix’s gripping new series, Hostage. In this role, she portrays a British Prime Minister whose husband faces the harrowing ordeal of being kidnapped. While her on-screen life brims with tension, her personal life with husband Laurence Akers paints a much quieter picture. Despite the couple’s current harmony, Laurence has previously described the early stages of their relationship as “complicated.”

How Suranne and Laurence Met

The couple first crossed paths in 2013, during the wedding of Coronation Street actress Sally Lindsay. Initially, Laurence was being set up with television personality Carol Vorderman, but a chance encounter led to their connection. Suranne recounted a memorable moment from the wedding, stating, “I asked my old Corrie boss to set me up with someone at the wedding. He said, ‘I do have a friend, he’s over there.'”

Laurence recalled the day, noting that his friends attempted to match him with Vorderman. After enjoying the festivities, he approached Suranne while she was dancing with actor Peter Eccleston. “Can I cut in?” he asked, but he ended up dancing with Peter instead. Suranne found his sense of humor appealing, and they exchanged numbers that night.

Just two years later, in 2015, the couple married in a private ceremony at Islington Town Hall. Reports suggest that Laurence proposed a mere six weeks after their initial meeting, demonstrating a swift connection between the two.

Navigating Early Challenges

Despite their seemingly effortless romance, Laurence faced challenges at the start of their relationship. He was living with an ex-partner at the time, a situation that he described as “complicated.” “I thought Suranne was stunning, really down to earth and funny,” he reflected. “Suranne said it sounded complicated and to call her once it was sorted. It gave me the motivation to finally move out.”

Their relationship blossomed, and they welcomed their first child, a son, in March 2016. Suranne, who is not active on social media, surprised fans when she revealed her pregnancy while attending the National Television Awards with a noticeable baby bump. The couple has opted to keep their son’s name private, prioritizing a low-key family life.

In a rare moment of sharing, Suranne expressed her joy in motherhood during an appearance on This Morning in 2017. “I love being a mum. It is the best,” she stated. Balancing her career and motherhood has been a journey, as she reflected on her role in Vigil: “Being a woman who constantly wants to prove herself… I think Amy and I share that. I have a child. I’m constantly trying to balance my life and my career.”

During the lockdown, the family expanded by adopting two dachshund puppies, further enriching their home in Muswell Hill, London.

Suranne Jones and Laurence Akers exemplify a modern family dynamic, navigating the complexities of personal and professional lives while cherishing their time together. Their journey, from a complicated beginning to a loving partnership, resonates with many, showcasing the unpredictable yet rewarding nature of relationships.
