Scalloway Museum Achieves Full Accreditation from MGS

Scalloway Museum has received full accreditation from Museum Galleries Scotland (MGS), affirming its status as a well-run institution within the UK’s museum sector. This prestigious recognition highlights the museum’s adherence to national standards in governance, collections care, and visitor services, ensuring that it provides a sustainable and high-quality experience for its visitors.
Managed by the Shetland Bus Friendship Society, Scalloway Museum has been a vital part of the local community since its opening in 2012. The museum is dedicated to celebrating and preserving the unique history of Scalloway and the important contributions of the Shetland Bus Operation during World War II. The recent accreditation complements the official opening of the Prince Olav Slipway, enhancing the museum’s appeal and community significance.
Commitment Recognized by Accreditation
Curator Laurie Goodlad expressed her excitement over the accreditation, stating, “It has been a lot of work to get to this stage, and I can’t thank the trustees of the museum enough for their support in finalising the application.” Goodlad emphasized that this achievement reflects the tireless dedication of the museum’s volunteers and trustees, who have been instrumental in its success.
“Without our volunteers, there would quite simply be no museum in Scalloway. Accreditation is recognition of everything they make possible,” she added. Goodlad pointed out that this recognition not only underlines the museum’s commitment to maintaining high standards but also provides a strong foundation for future developments.
Community Impact and Future Plans
Chairman of the Shetland Bus Friendship Society, Charlie Grant, also celebrated the achievement. He remarked, “On behalf of the trustees and volunteers, we are very pleased that Laurie Goodlad has achieved full accreditation for the Scalloway Museum. It comes after a lot of work done by Laurie, the trustees, and volunteers over the last year and puts the Scalloway Museum on a par with all the other museums in Scotland who are in the Museums Galleries Scotland scheme.”
Looking ahead, Scalloway Museum aims to build on this success by enhancing its exhibitions, events, and resources. The commitment to maintaining accessibility and engagement with the heritage of Scalloway and the surrounding area ensures that the museum remains a valuable asset for generations to come.
As Scalloway Museum continues to thrive, the accreditation from MGS serves as a testament to its quality and dedication to both the local community and visitors from around the world.
