Parents across the UK are preparing to spend an average of £467 to celebrate their teenage children’s exam results, according to a recent survey conducted by Moonpig. The findings highlight a strong inclination among parents to reward their children’s academic achievements, with cash gifts emerging as the most popular choice.

A poll of 1,500 parents of teenagers aged 16-18 revealed that alongside cash, many are opting for gifts such as clothing, smartphones, shoes, and jewellery. Other notable presents include laptops, festival tickets, and even holiday getaways, all of which feature in the top 30 most common gifts for results day.

Regional Spending Variations

While the average expenditure is £467, some regions show significantly higher figures. In London, parents are expected to spend as much as £902, while those in Northern Ireland plan to shell out an average of £783. The West Midlands follows closely with an average spend of £630. Notably, parents in Northern Ireland are most likely to invest in new laptops for their children, whereas those in Wales are prioritising experiential gifts like tickets to exhibitions or contributions towards spa days.

The South West stands out for its tendency to purchase musical instruments, while parents in the East Midlands are expected to assist with costs for new cars. In the East of England, motorbikes are among the more popular gifts.

Celebrating Achievements Beyond Grades

The survey indicates a significant sentiment among parents, with 68% confirming they plan to give gifts and cards regardless of their children’s grades. This reflects a broader perspective: 74% of respondents stated that they value the effort and dedication their children have shown rather than the outcomes alone. Interestingly, 23%36% of parents reported having already purchased a gift for results day, while 28% had done the same for a card.

Moonpig’s spokesperson commented on the findings, stating, “It’s interesting to see the different trends in how parents celebrate across the country. No matter how much you’re planning to spend or the types of gifts you choose to buy, all that matters is your kids knowing how proud you are of them.”

The research also explored the factors that motivate teenagers to succeed. Many parents cited their children’s sense of personal achievement and ambition as the primary motivators. However, 50% of parents admitted to using gifts or cash as incentives for achieving certain grades, reflecting the pressures they feel from external sources such as social media and other parents, with 38%
