King Charles III Officially Strips Prince Andrew of Titles

King Charles III has officially removed his brother, Prince Andrew, from his royal titles, a decision now recorded in the UK’s official state journal, The Gazette. The announcement, made on Thursday, signifies that Andrew is no longer recognized as a prince or as the Duke of York. This step follows ongoing scrutiny regarding Andrew’s ties to convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein.

According to the published notice, the dukedom was revoked by Royal Warrant, while Andrew’s status as a prince was terminated through a separate document known as Letters Patent. The entry states that, under Letters Patent dated November 3, 2025, “Andrew Mountbatten Windsor shall no longer be entitled to hold and enjoy the style, title or attribute of ‘Royal Highness’ and the titular dignity of ‘Prince’.” Letters Patent, issued under the Great Seal of the Realm, represent formal approval from the monarch for significant constitutional changes.

The decision comes as Buckingham Palace confirmed last week that Andrew would vacate Royal Lodge, his residence in Windsor. As pressure mounted over his connections to Epstein, sources indicated that the King’s choice to strip Andrew of his titles was not met with opposition from the royal family.

Andrew, formally known now as Andrew Mountbatten Windsor, had already relinquished several other titles in October, including the Duke of York, due to increasing scrutiny of his personal affairs. Buckingham Palace stated that these “censures are deemed necessary, notwithstanding the fact that he [Andrew] continues to deny the allegations against him.”

Renewed attention on Andrew’s case surfaced earlier this year when emails were released, revealing that he had maintained contact with Epstein longer than previously acknowledged. Additionally, a memoir published after the death of Virginia Giuffre last month reiterated allegations that she had sexual encounters with Andrew three times when she was 17 years old.

The formal removal of titles marks a significant moment for the British royal family, reflecting ongoing efforts to distance itself from controversies surrounding Andrew’s past. This action not only alters Andrew’s public persona but also signals a broader commitment by the monarchy to uphold its reputation in the face of serious allegations.
