Journalist Jelena Jovanovic Faces Threats Amid Investigation
Journalist Jelena Jovanovic has received threats once again, prompting an investigation by Montenegrin security services and the Basic State Prosecutor’s Office in Podgorica, in collaboration with authorities from Bosnia and Herzegovina. The intimidation is reportedly linked to her coverage of a construction company during television appearances.
On September 13, 2023, Jovanovic received a menacing message that alleged she had mentioned a particular construction firm in her broadcasts. The sender warned her, “Your security is paid for by the state, but mine is my responsibility. So think about who is safer, you or me.” The message escalated to a threat, stating, “If you mention the company again, next time you will be the one at a loss, not my company.”
Following the threat, Jovanovic promptly reported it to the police and the prosecutor’s office. She conveyed uncertainty about the sender’s identity but indicated it could originate from members of organized crime groups she has reported on extensively. Jovanovic expressed skepticism that the threat came from the construction company in question, noting, “It is unlikely someone would threaten and sign so transparently. I told the police and the prosecutor that I had not even mentioned that company in my show.”
The journalist emphasized that the nature of the threat appeared designed to mislead the investigation. “Someone wanted to direct the investigation towards the ownership structure of that firm and associated individuals, allowing them to achieve what they threaten,” she stated.
Authorities have confirmed that an investigation has been initiated against an unknown perpetrator for the criminal act of endangering safety. According to the Basic State Prosecutor’s Office, they have interviewed Jovanovic and submitted several requests for appropriate orders to the Basic Court in Podgorica. They have also ordered expert assessments and activated international legal assistance.
In response to the ongoing investigation, Dusko Milanovic, the head of the prosecutorial office, stated that further details cannot be disclosed to protect the integrity of the case. The swift response from law enforcement and the prosecutor’s office has been welcomed by Jovanovic, reflecting a commitment to addressing threats against journalists in Montenegro.
