Historic Whalen & Kastner Garage Transformed in Great Barrington
The historic Whalen & Kastner Garage in Great Barrington has undergone a significant transformation since its purchase by the Alander Group in 2022. Originally designed by prominent architect Joseph McArthur Vance and opened in 1924, the building has a rich history that reflects the evolution of automotive services in the region.
Located on Main Street, the garage was initially established by owners M. Curtin Whalen and Edward “Skippy” Kastner on the grounds of the former Searles Castle property. Over the years, it expanded to become a Ford dealership, known as Mahaiwe Motors, which operated for several decades. The dealership later came under the leadership of legendary car salesman Bill Whittaker, who promoted the latest Ford models, including the 1966 lineup, during his tenure.
The building’s role shifted when Berkshire Community College utilized it as a campus for several years. In 2022, the Alander Group, led by Ian Rasch and Roman Montano, acquired the property with plans to restore its historic character while adapting it for modern use.
Restoration Reveals Hidden Architectural Features
The renovation process focused on carefully restoring the front façade, which had concealed architectural details for decades. The restoration revealed three large white glass tiles inlaid with stained-glass lettering that prominently feature the last names of the original owners, Whalen and Kastner, along with “The W. K. Garage.” This attention to detail has been praised by local historians and residents alike.
The revitalized space now serves a dual purpose, combining business and residential areas. It is home to the Southern Berkshire Chamber of Commerce, further integrating the building into the community. This blend of historical preservation and contemporary usage exemplifies a growing trend in revitalizing historic structures while emphasizing their cultural significance.
A Glimpse into the Past
Photographs from various periods capture the garage’s history. Images from the 1950s show the team at Mahaiwe Motors, including automotive repair expert Jerry Jones Sr.. Another notable image from the late 1970s or early 1980s showcases Whittaker Auto Sales, while a 2015 photograph illustrates the building’s use by Berkshire Community College.
The successful transformation of the Whalen & Kastner Garage highlights the importance of preserving local heritage while adapting to current needs. With its blend of history and modernity, the building now stands as a testament to Great Barrington’s evolving landscape, making it a focal point for both residents and visitors.
