Dublin has been selected as one of 17 cities to participate in a pioneering European leadership programme aimed at enhancing local governance. The Bloomberg LSE European City Leadership Initiative, established by Bloomberg Philanthropies in collaboration with the London School of Economics and Political Science (LSE) and the Hertie School in Berlin, marks a significant step in equipping mayors and municipal officials across the European Union with essential leadership skills.

This initiative is the first professional leadership and management programme specifically designed for local government leaders within the EU. It aims to tackle pressing urban issues such as housing, transport, and youth engagement, providing participants with innovative strategies to modernise services and improve the quality of life for residents.

Richard Shakespeare, Chief Executive of Dublin City Council, expressed his enthusiasm for the selection, stating, “I am delighted that our city has been chosen to take part in the first-ever class of this leadership initiative. I look forward to working with colleagues from across Europe to tackle the issues facing all our cities. No one has the monopoly on solutions, so by working together I’m sure we can help each other.”

Under the guidance of Michael R. Bloomberg, former Mayor of New York City and founder of Bloomberg Philanthropies, the initiative will provide mayors and senior officials with vital tools and training to address their most significant challenges. Bloomberg noted, “As Europe increasingly looks to local governments to lead, we’re glad to join forces with the LSE and the Hertie School on this new initiative. Together, we can bring mayors and senior officials the tools, training, and peer networks they need to take on their biggest challenges – and succeed.”

The programme spans nine months and includes a combination of classroom instruction, field-based learning, and capacity-building activities. It is designed to empower local leaders to develop sharp management skills and foster strong teams capable of innovation.

Professor Larry Kramer, President and Vice Chancellor of LSE, highlighted the urgency of addressing complex urban challenges, stating, “Cities are where our most complex, urgent challenges show up first, and so where real solutions often start. Mayors across Europe are looking to lead – but to address the unique problems they face and deliver on new opportunities that emerge, they need sharp management, strong teams, and the skills to innovate. This is precisely what the Bloomberg LSE European City Leadership Initiative will help provide.”

Dublin’s participation in this initiative not only reflects the city’s commitment to effective governance but also its desire to collaborate with other European cities to find innovative solutions to shared challenges. As local governments take on increasingly significant roles in shaping urban futures, programs like this aim to equip leaders with the knowledge and resources necessary to enhance their communities.
