Authorities in Berane have filed criminal charges against a local timber mill owner, identified as N.F., aged 61, for suspected illegal logging. This charge, stemming from an investigation into ecological crime, was submitted to the Basic State Prosecutor’s Office in Berane by officers from the Regional Centre for Security “North.”

The investigation began when police discovered a total of 10.93 cubic meters of fir wood at N.F.’s timber mill, located in the Berane municipality. Following this discovery, law enforcement initiated measures to ascertain the wood’s origin, which led to a notification to the Forest Management Authority.

Inspectors from this authority subsequently identified the logging site on Jelovica Mountain. The police were informed of this development and took further action based on the findings. As a result, the state prosecutor was made aware of the situation and instructed that charges be filed against N.F. for the alleged crime.

The investigation indicates that the illegal logging has caused damage estimated at approximately 2,750 EUR to the Forest Management Authority. This incident highlights the ongoing efforts by the police to combat environmental crimes, as they continue to target activities that threaten natural resources.

In a statement, the Police Administration emphasized its commitment to discovering, preventing, and suppressing crimes that lead to the destruction of vital natural goods. They also called for collaboration from other agencies responsible for forest protection and parliamentary oversight related to forestry management and conservation efforts.

The police reiterated the importance of protecting biodiversity and preventing illegal activities within the forestry sector, noting their role as a law enforcement body in these crucial activities. This case serves as a reminder of the broader need for vigilance and cooperation in safeguarding natural resources against unlawful exploitation.
