Care Home Cancels Annual Contest Amid Water Restrictions

An annual event at Orchard Gardens Care Home in Swindon has been cancelled due to a local hosepipe ban. The popular wet T-shirt contest, which had become a highlight for residents and staff alike, will not take place this year, disappointing many who looked forward to the occasion.

The decision came after the surrounding area imposed water restrictions in response to ongoing drought conditions. With the ban affecting the ability to use hosepipes, the care home’s management deemed it necessary to abandon the contest, which typically involves residents donning wet T-shirts for a lighthearted competition.

Margaret Gerving, an 87-year-old resident, expressed her dismay at the cancellation. “I’m gutted,” she said. “If we’re running out of water, everyone should just drink more whisky. Never did me any harm.” Gerving had received a new, thin white crop top for the occasion, which she described as “too racy to wear on a daily basis.”

She added, “I was really looking forward to popping on my Daisy Dukes and wringing a sponge over my wrinkly double Ds. When you get to my age, you’re grateful for any attention you can get. The stakes are especially high for me because I’ve got a reigning champion title to defend. Plus, there’s no guarantee I’ll live to see next year’s contest.”

While T-shirts are off the table, some staff members are considering alternative activities. Carer Nikki Hollis suggested, “We can probably go ahead with a wet trousers contest. It’s not like we can stop the incontinent residents from pissing themselves anyway.”

The cancellation highlights the challenges faced by care homes in balancing fun activities with environmental considerations. For many residents, events like the wet T-shirt contest provide not only entertainment but also a sense of community and connection.

As the care home navigates these restrictions, it remains to be seen how future events will adapt. The management hopes to find other ways to engage residents while respecting local water conservation efforts.
