Trump Supports Sydney Sweeney’s Ad, Boosting American Eagle Stock
President Donald Trump has publicly endorsed Sydney Sweeney’s controversial advertisement for American Eagle, which has led to a substantial increase in the company’s stock value. Following Trump’s praise, American Eagle’s shares surged nearly 25%, bringing the stock price to $13.32 and elevating the brand’s market capitalization to approximately $2.3 billion.
The advertisement, released on July 23, 2024, features Sweeney promoting a pair of jeans while making a play on words about “genes.” In the ad, she states, “Genes are passed down from parents to offspring, often determining traits like hair colour, personality and even eye colour. My jeans are blue.” The ad drew criticism, with some suggesting that it leveraged Eurocentric beauty standards.
The White House subsequently defended the advertisement, and Sweeney’s political affiliation was revealed. It was confirmed by PinkNews and other news outlets that she has been registered with the Republican Party since 2024. Trump took to his platform, Truth Social, on August 4, 2024, to express his support for Sweeney, describing her ad as the “HOTTEST” and asserting that the jeans were “flying off the shelves.”
In his post, Trump also criticized various brands for what he termed “woke” campaigns, mentioning Bud Light and Jaguar. He referenced controversies surrounding Bud Light’s partnership with trans activist Dylan Mulvaney and expressed disdain for Taylor Swift, stating, “She was booed out of the Super Bowl and became NO LONGER HOT.” Trump’s comments reflect his broader criticism of celebrity activism and its perceived impact on consumer brands.
American Eagle has not publicly commented on Trump’s endorsement, but in a statement regarding the advertisement, the brand reiterated that the campaign “is and always was about the jeans.” They emphasized, “Her jeans. Her narrative. We will continue to honor the unique ways everyone wears their AE jeans with confidence. Great jeans flatter everyone.”
This endorsement from Trump has sparked significant debate online, with many discussing the intersection of politics, celebrity, and consumerism. The rise in American Eagle’s stock is a clear indicator of the ad’s impact, both commercially and culturally.
As the conversation continues, it remains to be seen how this endorsement will influence Sweeney’s career and American Eagle’s brand image moving forward.
