Macmillan Issues Urgent Call to Address UK Cancer Care Disparities

Macmillan Cancer Support has raised alarms regarding the disparities in cancer care across the United Kingdom, highlighting a troubling phenomenon it describes as a ‘cancer postcode lottery.’ The charity reports that nearly 1.4 million individuals with cancer are experiencing significant challenges in accessing timely treatment, largely due to their geographical location.

Approximately 40 percent of cancer patients have reported difficulties in obtaining necessary care, which often requires long journeys, incurs additional costs, and results in increased stress and fatigue. Macmillan warns that these barriers could potentially endanger the lives of an estimated 100,000 patients, as survey data indicates that around 3 percent have declined essential tests or treatments due to their distance from medical facilities.

Urgent Action Needed for Fairness in Care

Dr. Anthony Cunliffe, Macmillan’s Lead Medical Adviser, emphasized the need for immediate interventions to ensure equitable cancer care across the country. “We need to see urgent action taken to make cancer care fair. Everyone with cancer should get the best possible care the UK has to offer. Everyone should get the treatment that is right for them. No one should get left behind simply because of where they live,” he stated.

The charity’s analysis suggests that if waiting times for cancer treatment across the UK were aligned with those of the best-performing regions, approximately 60,000 more patients could receive timely interventions each year. This discrepancy extends not only to access but also to the availability of established treatments and the implementation of innovative therapies, which can significantly influence patient recovery and overall quality of life.

Personal Stories Highlight the Stakes

Personal accounts from patients underscore the critical nature of these disparities. Lisa Martin, a 45-year-old resident of Lancashire, was diagnosed with head and neck cancer in 2018. She expressed gratitude for being in a position to receive robotic surgery, stating, “All I can say is that I was in the right place, at the right time and was given the option to explore robotic surgery – without that, I don’t think I would still be here today.”

Martin noted that her surgery, lasting just 45 minutes, spared her from extensive radical surgery and its accompanying life-altering side effects, which could have included losing her teeth and being dependent on a feeding tube.

In contrast, Shaun Doherty, a 38-year-old from Strabane in Northern Ireland, underwent traditional surgery for his head and neck cancer in 2025. He had been unaware of the robotic surgery option until much later and shared, “The experience has had a big impact on my life. The structure of my jaw has changed, so my ability to chew will never be the same.”

Doherty’s treatment has left him with altered nerve function, affecting the simplest acts of affection. “We jokingly call them 50% kisses as I only feel on my top lip, but I am so grateful to be here. 50% kisses beat no kisses any day of the week,” he added.

Macmillan Cancer Support is actively seeking to enhance cancer care through research initiatives, partnerships, and an increase in specialized services. The organization is urging governments and health providers throughout the UK to address the inequalities in diagnosis and treatment that many patients currently face.
