FDA Issues Recall for 57,000 Target Burrito Meals Over Shrimp Allergy Risk
More than 57,000 burrito meals sold at Target have been recalled due to undeclared shrimp, posing a potential allergy risk to consumers. The recall involves the Good & Gather Southwest-Style Burrito Bowl Blend, produced by One Frozen. The decision to recall the product was made voluntarily after it was discovered that the meals contained shellfish not listed on the packaging.
Shellfish allergies are prevalent and can lead to severe reactions, including anaphylaxis, which can occur within moments of contact, as noted by the Mayo Clinic. Symptoms can range from facial swelling and hives to gastrointestinal distress. The affected burrito bowls were available for purchase at Target locations across all 50 states, according to a notice issued by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA).
The burrito bowls were distributed starting from April 17, 2025, but to date, there have been no reported illnesses linked to this issue. Consumers are being advised to check their freezers for any affected products and to dispose of them promptly.
Details of the Recall
The burrito meals come in 12-ounce red “steam in a bag” packaging, with a “Best Used By” date of August 24, 2026. Consumers who find the affected products with specific lot codes – 5055-1, L5055-2, L5055-3, L5055-4, L5055-5, and L5055-6 – are encouraged to contact Target guest relations for a full refund.
This recall follows another recent incident involving Target, where over 12,000 cookies were recalled due to concerns they may contain pieces of wood. The affected cookies, labeled as Favorite Day Bakery Frosted Sugar Cookies and manufactured by Give and Go, were distributed to Target stores in 21 states, including New York, Massachusetts, Michigan, and Virginia.
Target has faced scrutiny over these recalls, raising concerns about product safety in their stores. The company has not yet released a statement addressing the measures they are taking to prevent similar incidents in the future.
As food safety remains a crucial issue for consumers, the FDA continues to monitor and regulate food products to ensure public health is prioritized. The agency’s prompt action in this case highlights the importance of vigilance regarding food labeling and allergen disclosures.
