Experts Warn Vapers of Increased Risks from New COVID Strains

Health experts are sounding alarms regarding the vulnerability of vapers to new COVID-19 strains, which are causing rising infection rates across the United Kingdom. The strains, identified as Nimbus and Stratus, have led to a significant increase in COVID-19 cases, with the UK Health Security Agency reporting 3,049 new infections in the week ending October 1, 2023. This figure marks a 19 percent increase from the previous week. Hospitals are experiencing increased admissions, and symptoms such as sore throats, fatigue, and coughs are becoming more common among the population.
As colder months approach, health authorities are urging individuals to exercise caution, particularly in crowded spaces. Those who test positive for COVID-19 are advised to self-isolate for at least five days to help mitigate the spread of the virus. Recent statistics reveal that 87 deaths were recorded due to COVID-19, alongside 2,077 hospital admissions during the same week.
Vaping’s Impact on Respiratory Health
Keith Rochford, Assistant Professor at the School of Biotechnology at Dublin City University, has highlighted the particular risks faced by vapers during this surge in infections. He explained that the lining of the lungs must remain robust to combat infections, but vaping can exacerbate stress on this protective layer. The chemicals released from e-cigarettes, including solvents like propylene glycol and various flavoring agents, can penetrate deeply into the lungs. This exposure may irritate the endothelium, the delicate layer of cells that lines blood vessels and plays a crucial role in maintaining healthy respiratory function.
Rochford stated, “Healthy endothelium keeps blood flowing smoothly, discourages unnecessary clotting, and acts as a selective gatekeeper for the bloodstream.” He noted that studies have shown vaping can lead to endothelial dysfunction, even among young and otherwise healthy individuals. The synergy between vaping and COVID-19 can create a “perfect storm,” where inflammation in the lungs can lead to more severe respiratory complications.
Long-term Risks and Recovery Challenges
The combination of these new COVID-19 variants and vaping poses significant challenges for lung recovery. Marc Effron, a representative from Legacy Healing Center, warned that the irritation caused by vaping can hinder the lungs’ ability to heal from COVID-19 infections. He elaborated on the risks: “Vaping already puts significant stress on the lungs. When you add a respiratory virus like COVID-19, particularly with these new strains, it becomes a dangerous mix.”
Effron explained that the Nimbus and Stratus variants appear to infect both the upper and lower airways more effectively. If these airways are already compromised by vaping, the body struggles to eliminate the virus, potentially resulting in more severe symptoms and prolonged recovery times. Reports suggest that some vapers experience extended periods of fatigue and reduced lung function, even after mild infections.
He cautioned, “The combination of inflamed tissue and reduced oxygen exchange can lead to symptoms that resemble long COVID. Every puff delays the healing process.” Medical professionals in the UK have also noted a resurgence in classic COVID-19 symptoms, such as sore throats and hoarse voices, alongside an increase in lingering respiratory issues among individuals who vape.
As the number of COVID-19 cases continues to rise, experts emphasize the importance of giving lungs the best chance to recover. Effron advises individuals who have recently contracted COVID-19 or who are experiencing respiratory symptoms to consider temporarily halting their vaping habits. “Your lungs are already fighting off one attacker, which is COVID-19. Don’t give them another opponent in the form of vapour chemicals.”
In conclusion, the emergence of the Nimbus and Stratus strains, coupled with the health impacts of vaping, illustrates the complex challenges facing public health. Experts continue to advocate for awareness and proactive health measures to help mitigate risks and promote recovery as the situation develops.
