Strictly Come Dancing Welcomes First Drag Artist for Main Series
Strictly Come Dancing has made history by signing its first drag artist for the main series, announcing that the entertainer known as La Voix will be part of the upcoming season. La Voix, whose real name is Chris Dennis, is a 45-year-old performer from Stockton-on-Tees. The announcement was made by the BBC on October 17, 2023, marking a significant step in inclusivity for the popular dance competition.
La Voix is expected to be paired with a tall male professional dancer, given that Dennis stands around 5 feet 7 inches in stocking feet and will be nearly 6 feet tall in dance shoes. This consideration is crucial for the choreography and overall performance in a show where height can impact dance dynamics.
A source from the show revealed that previous attempts to incorporate a drag artist included Tayce, who won the Christmas Special of the show last year alongside professional dancer Kai Widdrington. The insider noted, “La Voix is a bit more of an old-school entertainer who’s a little closer to the traditional Strictly audience in terms of style and vibe.” This reflects the producers’ commitment to evolving the show while appealing to its established fan base.
The inclusion of La Voix is noteworthy, as it represents a growing trend in international versions of dance competitions. For instance, America’s Dancing with the Stars featured drag performer Shangela in 2022, while Courtney Act captivated audiences on the Australian version in 2019.
In addition to La Voix, the BBC also confirmed that Balvinder Sopal, known for her role in EastEnders, will be joining the cast this season. This aligns with the show’s history of including actors from the long-running soap opera, further enhancing its connection to popular culture.
As the new season approaches, fans are eager to see how La Voix will bring her unique flair to the dance floor. The integration of drag artistry into mainstream television continues to challenge traditional norms and reflects a broader acceptance within the entertainment industry. The upcoming episodes promise to be a celebration of diversity, showcasing talent across a spectrum of backgrounds and styles.
With the series set to air on BBC One later this year, viewers can expect an exciting blend of performances that push boundaries and entertain audiences.
