South African Romcom ‘Love and Wine’ Captivates Netflix Audiences
Netflix’s latest romantic comedy, Love and Wine, is gaining traction among viewers, despite not initially making headlines. The film, which hails from South Africa, stars Masali Baduza, known for her role in the popular series Bridgerton, as Amahle Philliso, an ambitious nursing trainee. The storyline explores class disparities in South Africa while weaving a delightful romantic narrative.
In Love and Wine, Amahle, a working-class student, finds it challenging to relate to the wealthy elite in her city. The plot centers around Ovee Sityebi, portrayed by Ntobeko Sishi, the son of a billionaire. Ovee, lacking direction in life and preferring a carefree existence filled with parties, faces pressure from his father to join the family business. In a bid to earn his place based on merit, Ovee decides to switch lives with his less affluent friend, Nathi Maseko, played by Thandolwethu Zondi. They both enroll in internships at a prestigious wine estate owned by Ovee’s father, adopting each other’s identities.
During this identity swap, Ovee meets Amahle and forms a connection while keeping his privileged background a secret. The film, while following a familiar romcom template, offers a fresh perspective on social class dynamics in South Africa. According to the Daily Record, the film provides a unique cultural insight alongside its romantic storyline.
Despite being a Netflix production, Love and Wine has not garnered widespread attention yet. However, audiences who have watched it are expressing their delight. A review from TellTaleTV described it as a “heart-warming, feel-good romcom,” noting the excellent execution of its somewhat conventional narrative. The review highlighted the film’s strong performances, well-timed humour, and engaging storyline.
Viewers have taken to X, formerly known as Twitter, to share their positive reactions. One user stated, “Just watched Love and Wine on Netflix… and wow. It’s been such a long time since a romantic movie made me smile like this.” Another remarked, “Love + Wine on Netflix is such a goooooodddd movie.” Even those who typically avoid romantic films are finding joy in this one. A viewer confessed, “I don’t watch romantic movies… in fact, I hate romantic movies… But this movie… ‘Love and Wine’ on Netflix, go watch it. It’s so mushy mushy.”
Leading actress Baduza, who appears as Michaela Stirling in Bridgerton, made her debut in the series finale and is expected to gain more prominence in upcoming seasons. Her character’s storyline hinted at a potential lesbian romance, which has intrigued fans.
As Love and Wine continues to stream on Netflix, it offers a blend of entertainment and cultural commentary, appealing to a broad audience looking for both laughter and insight.
