Slade’s Farewell Tour: Celebrating 52 Years of Musical Joy
The iconic British band Slade is set to embark on their final tour, celebrating over five decades of music that has resonated with audiences across generations. Starting on November 28, 2023, in Hastings, the tour promises to evoke nostalgia and joy as fans gather to experience the band’s vibrant sound one last time.
In 1973, Slade emerged as a dominant force in the music scene, releasing hits like “Cum on Feel the Noize” and “Merry Xmas Everybody.” Their Christmas classic, which became an enduring favorite, owes part of its success to the legendary John Lennon. During a brief stop in New York, the band recorded the track after Lennon generously offered them studio time, allowing them to capture the festive spirit that would resonate with audiences for decades.
Reflecting on that tumultuous year, guitarist Dave Hill recalled the societal challenges in Britain, including strikes and energy shortages. “1973 was one heck of a year,” he stated. “The mood of the country was low… But all through that there was joy in the music we were doing. We raised a nation.” This sentiment highlights how Slade’s glam rock sound provided an escape for listeners during challenging times.
As Slade prepares for their farewell tour, featuring bandmates John Berry, Russell Keefe, and Alex Bines, Hill reflects on the enduring appeal of their music. With 21 Top 20 records to their name, including hits like “Mama Weer All Crazee Now,” Slade’s songs continue to evoke fond memories for fans. Hill believes this nostalgia is a key factor in their sustained popularity. “There is something reassuring about Slade’s music,” he explained. “Everyone wants to have that feeling of returning to their happiest times.”
Despite the excitement surrounding the upcoming tour, it marks a bittersweet moment for Hill. At nearly 80 years old, he acknowledges the physical demands of performing. “I don’t want to do back-to-back shows anymore,” he admitted. The decision to stop touring does not diminish his passion for music. Hill clarified, “The joy hasn’t gone,” emphasizing that while he will continue to perform, this tour represents a significant milestone in his career.
Hill reminisced about the band’s beginnings in Wolverhampton and their rise to fame. He described the early days, recalling his trademark flamboyant style and the camaraderie with fellow band members, including lead singer Noddy Holder. Although Holder left the band in 1992, Hill has maintained a close friendship with him. “Nod and I have always been extremely close – we’re buddies for life,” he shared.
As the band embarks on this final journey, it is clear that their music has left an indelible mark on the industry and their fans. Hill fondly recalled a time at the Reading Festival, where a massive crowd spontaneously called for “Merry Xmas Everybody,” underscoring the song’s lasting impact.
Life has posed challenges for Hill, including battles with depression and a stroke in 2010. Yet, his spirit remains resilient. He is preparing to release his first solo album next year, produced by Holder’s son, Django.
On stage, Hill plans to reflect on his journey. “I’ll stand on stage and think to myself, ‘Here’s a boy that was really bad at school… yet here I am at 79 still performing,’” he said. This personal connection to their music, combined with the joy it brings audiences, is a legacy that Hill holds dear.
As the countdown begins to Slade’s final tour, anticipation builds among fans eager to experience the band’s lively performances one last time. With their music continuing to resonate, Slade’s farewell tour promises to be a celebration of a remarkable career that has brought joy to millions.
