Exodus Developers Clarify Matthew McConaughey’s Role in Game
The developers behind the upcoming video game Exodus have confirmed that actor Matthew McConaughey has not contributed any AI-generated content to the game, despite his recent partnership with AI voice-generation company Elevenlabs. Co-founder of the studio Archetype, Chad Robertson, emphasized that all of McConaughey’s voice work in Exodus consists of bespoke recordings specifically created for the game.
In an interview with Eurogamer, Robertson clarified, “No, no. Everything that’s in Exodus – 100 percent of what’s in Exodus – is bespoke VO recording just for us.” This statement addresses concerns that McConaughey’s involvement in AI might influence how his voice is utilized within the game. The actor has established a separate arrangement with Elevenlabs, allowing his voice to be leveraged in non-bespoke voice sessions for other projects. However, stringent rules govern how his voice can be used in those contexts, ensuring that Exodus maintains its original audio integrity.
Robertson also elaborated on the studio’s perspective regarding the adoption of AI technology in their future projects. While currently, they do not plan to incorporate generative AI into Exodus, he acknowledged that they must remain open-minded as the technology evolves. “We don’t have plans to use generative AI for any elements of it,” he stated. “But we reserve the right to change that if things require it to get the game at the quality that we need it, or the timeline or budget that we need.”
The developers are mindful of the ongoing discussions around AI in the gaming industry and its implications for creativity and originality. While some players remain skeptical about the reliance on AI in games, the team at Archetype is committed to delivering a unique experience without compromising their artistic vision.
As for the game’s release, fans can expect Exodus to arrive in 2027, as indicated by its trailer showcased at the recent Geoffies event. With the anticipation building, the developers are focused on refining the game, ensuring it stands out in a crowded sci-fi genre.
While the absence of AI-generated content may not sway all potential players, the clear dedication to quality voice acting and original storytelling could prove appealing as Exodus continues its development. As the industry grapples with the challenges and opportunities presented by AI, Archetype’s commitment to bespoke production sets a notable precedent in the gaming landscape.
