Davina McCall Shares Life Lessons After Tumour Diagnosis
Television presenter Davina McCall recently opened up about her experience following a brain tumour diagnosis during a health check-up in November 2023. Although doctors confirmed the tumour was benign, McCall faced a profound emotional challenge, convinced that her life was nearing its end. In response, she created an end-of-life checklist, which she now describes as “the best gift” she could have given herself.
During an interview at Fearne Cotton’s Happy Place Festival, McCall revealed that her initial denial lasted for four months after her diagnosis. It wasn’t until she received a decisive warning from her fourth neurosurgeon that she understood the urgency of her situation. He informed her that the tumour, described as significant, posed a risk of causing water on the brain, which could lead to severe complications. McCall recalled, “It’s a big tumour. It can’t grow anymore, or you’ll get water on the brain. If you’re on a plane, there would have to be an emergency landing.”
Facing Mortality and Finding Peace
McCall expressed the need to mentally prepare for her surgery, saying, “I needed to get my brain in the right place where I could be calm before the operation.” A significant part of her mental preparation involved ensuring that her children would be cared for if she did not survive the procedure. The 57-year-old, who shares three children—Holly (23), Tilly (21), and Chester (18)—with her ex-husband, Matthew Robertson, reflected on her profound love for them: “You are only happy as your unhappiest child.”
Despite her worries, McCall ultimately found solace in the knowledge that her children would be alright. She stated, “I felt I could go to sleep on the operating table and know that they were all here to help me, but I can let go of the outcome, and it was the best gift.”
The checklist she created was less about tangible items and more about achieving emotional peace regarding her family’s future. McCall described her brain surgery as “the best thing to ever happen to me,” revealing that the experience transformed her perspective on life and death.
A Journey of Growth and Acceptance
Reflecting on her journey, McCall shared that she is no longer afraid of dying. “It was the biggest journey of my life. It was an amazing time,” she explained. She emphasized the importance of personal growth through struggles, stating, “I have been on a massive life journey, and I have been through terrible struggles. That is where the learning comes from.”
This profound experience has altered McCall’s outlook on future challenges. She affirmed, “If something really hard happens now, I know it is a good thing.” Her story serves as a reminder of the strength found in vulnerability and the importance of preparing emotionally for life’s uncertainties.
Through her journey, Davina McCall has not only highlighted the significance of health awareness but also the power of resilience in the face of adversity.
