Art, Music, and Learning: Community Events Enrich Berkshires

The Berkshires are buzzing with cultural activities this autumn, offering residents and visitors an array of events that celebrate art, music, and education. Key highlights include an exhibition by sculptor Ann Jon, a musical adaptation of Jimmy Buffett’s songs, new book clubs, and fresh courses designed for lifelong learners.
Ann Jon’s Retrospective at Chesterwood
Chesterwood, located in Stockbridge, is showcasing a significant exhibition titled “Ann Jon Retrospective” until October 31st. This exhibit features thirty-one pieces from the renowned local sculptor, who has spent her life exploring different cultures and artistic mediums. Jon’s journey began in Denmark, where her passion for art sparked. At eighteen, she moved to America, later honing her skills in stone carving under the guidance of notable instructors at The Art Students League in New York and the Accademia di Belle Arte de Carrara in Italy.
Throughout her career, Jon has drawn inspiration from diverse sources, including her experiences in the canyons of the Southwest and the petroglyphs of Native American cultures. She stated, “As I researched many cultures and mythologies, I became aware of a subconscious thread that seemed to connect them all.” The retrospective invites viewers to engage with her artistic evolution and cultural explorations.
Musical Escape at Mac-Haydn Theatre
The Mac-Haydn Theatre in Chatham, New York, is presenting the vibrant musical “Escape to Margaritaville” until August 31st. This production features the beloved tunes of Jimmy Buffett, encompassing his iconic hits like “Cheeseburger in Paradise” and “Volcano.” The show combines romance, comedy, and a tropical atmosphere, making it an ideal summer getaway for audiences of all ages.
To enhance the experience, the theatre will offer frozen margaritas at every performance, ensuring patrons can fully immerse themselves in the laid-back, island vibe. This musical promises to be a lively escape for attendees looking to enjoy a night of entertainment.
Lenox Library Launches New Book Club
In literary news, the Lenox Library is initiating a new monthly book club tailored for adults who appreciate young adult literature. The inaugural meeting is scheduled for September 30th from 17:30 to 18:30, featuring K. A. Cobell’s debut novel, “Looking For Smoke.” This gripping tale delves into themes of loss and betrayal against the backdrop of a Blackfeet community, where a group of friends becomes embroiled in a murder investigation.
Participants can expect to engage in thoughtful discussions about both new and classic young adult titles. The book club will meet on the last Tuesday of each month, providing a space for adults to explore this genre and connect with fellow readers.

Led by Professor of Music Ellen Shanahan, this beloved group is reopening its doors to students, alumni, staff, and community members. The Chorale had been inactive for a few years but is now revitalized due to renewed interest in choral music.
Rehearsals will occur weekly on Thursdays from 14:00 to 15:00 at the BCC campus in Pittsfield. No prior experience is required, making this an excellent opportunity for individuals to express their musical talents and connect with others in the community.
